Breaking: House Rejects $700 Billion Financial Bailout

The House has just rejected the $700 Billion Financial Bailout.

From Market Watch...

The U.S. House rejected on Monday a proposed $700 billion financial bailout package supported by the Bush administration, the Federal Reserve and the congressional leadership of both parties. The vote was 205 for and 228 against. The rejection of the plan could mean disruption in financial markets and another attempt by officials to craft a compromise plan that will get a majority vote. The administration had been pushing for quick movement on the bailout, which officials have warned is necessary to avert serious consequences for markets and the economy. Some critics said the plan was a giveaway to the very companies that created the crisis, while others said it amounted to socialism.

Let me know what you think about the rejection of this bailout. Are you happy it was rejected? Are you worried it was rejected? Let me know in comments.

I WILL CONTINUE TO UPDATE THIS POST AS NEEDED.

UPDATES...

From The New York Times...

In a moment of historic drama in the Capitol and on Wall Street, the House of Representatives voted on Monday to reject a $700 billion rescue of the financial industry.

From The Moderate Voice...

In a major upset, the US House of Representatives has voted against passage of the $700 billion bailout bill. The vote was 228-205 against. Democrats voted 141-94 in favor of the measure while Republicans voted 131-67 in opposition to the proposal. There are now discussions as to whether or not a new vote sometime later today.

Reacting to the news, the Dow Jones is down by a range of 400-600 points. At one point the drop was over 700 points so it does seem that the market is stabilizing somewhat.

From The Associated Press...

A White House spokesman says President Bush is very disappointed in Monday's House vote rejecting the administration's rescue plan for the nation's financial industry.

"There's no question that the country is facing a difficult crisis that needs to be addressed," said spokesman Tony Fratto. He said the president will be meeting with members of his team later in the day "to determine next steps."

Bush is "very disappointed" with the vote, Fratto said.

The bailout was just another tactic to seize more control of the peoples assets by the banksters.
But one thing is for sure, their contingency plan to its failure will be more insidious

And as far as the blame game on Pelosi:

http://mediamatters.org/items/200809300001

Another reason we need a purge from our government of the right wing and neocon factors of the Republican Party which may be most of them these days. Their lies, vitriolic attempts to destroy people are reminiscent of the Nazi government. If Nancy Pelosi had been as hateful as they are, Bush would have been impeached a year ago and all the garbage of his presidency would have brought him, Cheney and the rest of the hateful people in his administration down. These are the worst bunch of scoundrels our country has ever seen and defies human decency. I believe Obama will bring decency back to America.

I'm glad Pelosi spoke her mind. It's time to take off the kid gloves. I don't understand why the folks aren't figuring out a way to save every day folks instead. But there's no time for that. We need to do it now, like we had to invade Iraq immediately without proper research, thought, and consulting. The "crisis politics" thing that the Repubs seem to be so fond of is getting really tiresome.

Well I for one am opposed to it. When they talk about the treasury they are talking about the world bank. When they say the Federal Reserve they are talking about the International Monetary Fund. These 2 have nothing to do with our government. They are the ones who print money out of thin air. There is no gold or silver to back up the money.

Honestly, I find this shocking--not because I think the bailout bill is fantastic, but the reason given was that Speaker Pelosi gave a "partisan" speech on the floor. Please. The Dems voted 60/40 for the bill and the Republicans voted 2-1 against proportionately, even after they had a specific representative at the table. The result? Wall Street tanks by over 700 pts. It's time to learn how to govern, though I suspect that may be too much to ask from folks who did it so poorly for 12 years.
