Brokaw's "Novel Idea" for the Media? Let the Voters Decide

1/9/08
by Heather H

It's nice to know that the results of New Hampshire (and Catherine put it succinctly in her post lastnight) are going to take the air out of the media's coronation balloon for either the Democratic or Republican nomination, for at least the next several weeks (though they're still working very hard to declare Mitt Romney dead--who happens to lead the delegate count right now for Republicans).

It seems like it's not only voters who are miffed by the media's coverage. Check out this great exchange lastnight on MSNBC with Tom Brokaw, recounted in the New York Times' "TV Decoder" blog.

Here's the quick excerpt:

MATTHEWS: We're going to have to go back and figure out the methodology, I think, on some of these.

BROKAW: You know what I think we're going to have to go back and do? Wait for the voters to make their judgment.

MATTHEWS: What do we do then in the days before balloting–

    BROKAW: What a novel idea–

MATTHEWS: –We must stay home then I guess.

BROKAW: No, no, we don't stay home. There are reasons to analyze what they're saying. We know from how the people voted today what moved them to vote. We can take a look at that. There are a lot of issues that had not been fully explored in all this.

You can read the full exchange covered in the Times.

Heather thanks for sharing this transcript. I thought that this was the highlight of MSNBC's coverage of the NH primary. Chris Matthews could certainly take many lessons from a respected veteran like Tom Brokaw.

I love it! I'm so tired of how the media is hellbent on deciding who is going to be the nominee for each party before anyone actually gets to vote on it. And making this a three way race for the Dems from the start just infuriates me. I think I'm going to vote Richardson, not just because I really like him and this he's exceptionally qualified, but also because I'm angry that the media thinks I only have three choices.
