Fred Thompson Drops Out of Race

Senator Fred Thompson 1/22/08
by Heather H

Senator Fred Thompson, who entered the presidential race officially less than six months ago, dropped out after a disappointing third-place showing in South Carolina's primary on Saturday.

Thompson was heavily recruited by some Republicans as a candidate who had strong conservative credentials across the old Reagan coalition—social (i.e. abortion, "family values"), national security, and economic. But his campaign, after the initial hype, never caught fire. The press (repeatedly) noted his relatively light campaign schedule, and seeming disinterest in actually campaigning for the job (an absolute no-no where they're concerned).

I suspect that some of those things were responsible for Thompson's poor showing. But as much as all the Republican candidates invoke Ronald Reagan, and as important as each of the individual pieces of the coalition may be, it would appear that voters this year are looking for a story that has yet to be written, rather than a movie they've already seen.

Thompson's brief statement. Some reaction from both right and left . . .

"Bin Laden is more symbolism than anything else."
-- Fred Thompson

"That's going back in history. I don't remember the details of it."
-- Fred Thompson, asked about Terri Schiavo case from 2005

"Congressional Democrats are trying to divert attention from insulting our military leader in Iraq and pandering to the loony left by attacking Rush Limbaugh. He is one of the strongest supporters of our troops ... I wonder who General Petraeus and his troops think is most supportive?"
-- Fred Thompson, siding with Rush Limbaugh against our soldiers in the field

"The day before Senate Watergate Committee minority counsel Fred Thompson made the inquiry that launched him into the national spotlight - asking an aide to President Nixon if there was a White House taping system - he telephoned Nixon's lawyer.

"Thompson tipped off the White House that the committee knew about the taping system and would be making the information public. In his all-but-forgotten Watergate memoir, "At That Point in Time," Thompson said he acted with "no authority" in divulging the committee's knowledge of the tapes, which provided the evidence that led to Nixon's resignation. It was one of many Thompson leaks to the Nixon team, ac-cording to a former investigator for Democrats on the committee, Scott Armstrong, who remains upset at Thompson's actions.

"'Thompson was a mole for the White House,' Armstrong said."

We're better off without Thompson in public office.

Oh my God, what a menace to society he was. We have had enough with what Bush has done and is doing! Whew... about time. Now is time for Huckabee, Romney, Guliani and of course McCain. I have voted Republican before, but please...we are so much worse now, we have regressed 20 years, and the problem begins with the "Christian" "right," love has no boundaries, and Jesus never pushed faith on anyone or condemned anyone. Oh, wait I am wrong..., yes he was not too very happy with the Pharisees, and they very much look like the "Christian" "right" of today...Uhhmm, they choose to judge more than they choose to love, and they prefer the "law," in itself more than whom the law was meant to serve. Is that Christianity?
Ah, and if it is all about Christianity, wasn't it Jesus who broke the law on more than one ocassion, all for the greater good? Ah, and wasn't it Him who demonstrated that is best to pour your heart out, serve and do what is good than to follow the law? Because the law was made to serve us and not the other way around, lest we would be enslaved by our own God, but he came to liberate us, not to enslave us; Yet, no one but Jesus was able to fulfill the law. Therefore, we should be loving with each other, and not be pushing or judging people's faith or lack of it, or their decisions, for as long as they do not harm others. That's a big reason why I am voting for Obama! He is a uniter, and that's the way we should all be! Live and let live. Good values, then experience.

Thompson was a loser candidate that had nothing going for him but image (and perceived image at that), so anyone who supported him is a loser also.

Thank you for reading my thoughts,

Do you see what a writer strike can do to somebody. If he had the rigt people listening for him, he would of run on the customer service ticket, because that is what the fast food customer wants.

Thet need to have the attitude of what can I do to make you happy, and after they do that for a while, they would find out about the hottest topic on the Internet right now.

"The Department of Positive Out of Body Possibilities"

A place where they are talking about communicating with future potential out of body afterlife people in a way that can be measured, and then placed on the Internet.

The idea is free, and getting it started is free as well.

Thank you for providing this opportunity to comment,

Tim

I am so disappointed that he didn't do better. I think the media had a lot to do with that. As far as I am concerned, he was the only 1 I would feel strongly about voting for. Now where do I go.
