The McCain Health Care Plan: Straight Talk or Double Talk?

April 29, 2008 -- Posted by Catherine Morgan

Last week I did a post for BlogHer on the realities of John McCain's health care plan -- Would You Be Covered Under McCain's Health Care Plan? Here is an excerpt...
Would you be covered under John McCain's health care plan? I wouldn't.

Regardless of who wins the Democratic nomination, that person will be running against John McCain. Not too long ago, I posted about McCain's position on a woman's right to choose. Basically, his position is to do everything possible to stop a woman from having reproductive choices. And when it comes to McCain's healthcare plan, anyone with a preexisting medical condition should be very concerned.

I was watching ABC's Sunday program, This Week with George Stephanopoulos John McCain was being interviewed, first on the economy, then on his healthcare plan, and then on Barack Obama's patriotism. I already wrote about what I thought of John McCain's plan for the economy. So, I thought I would take some time to address his plan (or lack of) for healthcare.

Unlike the Clinton and Obama plans, McCain doesn't seem to think it's important to insure everyone have quality and affordable healthcare. It actually seems like his plan is to see how happy he can make the health insurance industry.

Over 40 million Americans do not have health insurance, and under the McCain plan, neither will people with preexisting conditions. So, who won't be covered? Anyone with a preexisting condition such as...

  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Any Type of Cancer
  • Heart/Blood Pressure Problems
  • All Chronic Illnesses

But don't worry. McCain says, he will "talk" to each state and "try" to have them cover some people with preexisting conditions. Well...That makes me feel a lot better...NOT. This is nothing more than straight-talking double-talk. What he should be saying is...If you thought things were bad with health care now, just wait till I am in office. I think someone needs to point out to the McCain campaign, that calling something "straight-talk" doesn't actually make it straight-talk. Although, in his defense, he is just doing exactly what the Bush administration has become an expert in. Giving something a "feel good" name, that doesn't reflect the truth in any way. Let me give you some examples...

Just to name a few.

Bottom line. Things aren't always as they seem...Especially when it come to straight-talk.

This is from The New York Times...
As Senator John McCain spends the week talking about health care and health insurance coverage, the Service Employees International Union has begun broadcasting an ad against his plans in Ohio and Washington, D.C.

The S.E.I.U.'s ad buy coincides with a new bus tour it began this week, starting in Cleveland, to promote and push for better health insurance coverage.

Let me know what you think about John McCain's health care plan in comments.

Well said, Kristina, everyone's vote should be counted, else it is hypocritical for the US to promote democracy around the world if it can't be achieved in America. Will this next election be the third strike against democracy as we know it? I have too many unanswered questions about Obama & his speeches, while inspiring, seem woefully short on specifics. What I do know is life in America during the Clintons' term was very good for us 'average' citizens. We were respected around the world & I could be proud to call myself an American, with the exception of the media's embarrassingly low-brow treatment of them & the left-wing's never ending investigations that went nowhere & wasted billions of our hard-earned money, which in itself made us something of a laughing stock. We need universal health care because if we cannot take care of our own it would be a very sad commentary on America that one of the richest countries in the world tolerates hunger, homelessness & folks suffering & sometimes dying needlessly from easily treatable medical conditions. We are better than that!

What is a preexisting condition? I didn't think anything could exist before it existed.

The local news(Loco news) has not been fair to Obama from day one after he start winning 30 state. This is why I look upon the Loco news as the House of spin,.This is why after this thing is over I'm going back to independed news.
The loco news are totally out of touch with the America population,.The loco news media backs powerful corporations interest only. The Local news media has betrayed the public trust, ABC, NBC, CBS I dubbed thee the House of spin, may the America population turn you off. The Loco news let Hillery get away with murder, there is really no objectivity, at all when it comes to politics because the loco news media is apart of the corruption.

Controlled health care should be for those who can't afford it. I agree that McCain should not be elected because of his views on health coverage. As far as I can see, it seems no one running the political race is perfect. I guess we will have to vote for the one with the less strikes against them.

Why must both Dem and Rep media bash each other and only focus on the negatives? This story does not tell me anything. What are the positives and negatives of each canditate's plan? Personally I think if a sliding scale were raised for family plans rather than only child health plus plans, that could help. Personally I think people should take better care of themselves and better warned against all the toxic food marketed here. I feel a government paid total health plan for everyone wouldn't be one I would want to have, plus the cost of care is enormous due to high priced drugs (and overuse of them) as well as the ridiculous cost of doctors malpractice insurance. Governmant maganged health care will undoubtedly result in overuse of it, ie - consumers prescribed expensive drugs of the month and numerous tests (which are also overprescribed by doctors afraid of lawsuits)

I am horrified at the attitudes displayed by John McCain. How can he be so callous? Would he want his loved ones treated under these guidelines?

Something should be done about the dis-enfranchising of voters first. Bush stole the White House & now Obama is trying to do the same thing. Everyone agreed to recounts in Fl & Mi but Obama. The only reason he didnt agree is he knew the vote would be the same.If Fl & Mi were included Obama would be behind, if they revoted he would be behind. THis really puts us in a bad spot, vote for the man who is willing to sacrifice Democracy to win or vote for the Devil. Obama has zero integrity, look at his $300,000 house deal in exchange for selling out the poor citizens in Illinois. He can't be trusted, but he can be bought. Obama's health care plan also doesnt cover everyone, so kinda good, but not really good enough.

I don't know if Clinton or Obama is the answer; what I do know is that this country cannot handle another four more years of McBush! He needs to get a grip and get enlightened. Trickle down and corporate handouts help the rich and make the rest of poor.
