McCain Squirms on Birth Control and Viagra

We already know that John McCain doesn't want women to have a choice when it comes to abortion, but it's also clear that he doesn't think giving women more access to birth control is very important. Since more access to birth control is clearly something that would reduce the need for women to have an abortion, it seems McCain is at best clueless, or at worst just doesn't care about women.

From Pam's House Blend...

Los Angeles Times Staff Writer Cathleen Decker apparently did some homework, and put Sen. McCain on the spot for votes on regarding making birth control mandatory for health insurance coverage. Per a story in the Los Angeles Times, apparently McCain twice voted against measures that would have required insurance companies to cover birth control -- in both 2003 and 2005.

Watch Sen. McCain get really uncomfortable as he's pressed on the issue:

I think the telling line is that video is:
It's...ah...something that I had not thought much about...

Not thinking about fairness between men's and women's healthcare coverage; not thinking about women's issues and women's healthcare...well!

And as has apparently happened frequently before, Sen. McCain can't seem to remember much about issues he's voted on that impact a voting demographic he allegedly wants to cut into...D'oh!

From The Huffington Post...
How damaging is this video, now spreading around the web, showing John McCain squirming, stumbling, and then claiming ignorance about his position on providing women with birth control?

Apparently, very damaging. A Democratic Party strategist familiar with internal polling said McCain's two votes against requiring insurance companies to cover prescription birth control have been polled in battleground states and had tremendous resonance with women, including independents and Republicans.

From Planned Parenthood...
"Time after time, Sen. McCain has shown that he is out of touch when it comes to women's health care," said Cecile Richards, Planned Parenthood Action Fund president. "Birth control is basic health care for women. But yesterday, Sen. McCain ducked a straightforward question about whether he thinks insurance companies should cover birth control. Women in America are still waiting for his answer."

In 2003, McCain voted NO on the Murray Amendment (S.Amdt 258 to S. 3, vote 45, 3/11/03), which would have improved the availability of contraceptives for women and required insurance coverage of prescription birth control.

The only reason McPain ducked this issue is to keep his shares high on the side of the anti-abortion Fundamentalists.

Kathy, I knew women who lived across the street from me in Chicago before I moved who were on welfare and went out of their way to get pregnant to get more money from the welfare system. They did NOT even attempt to get jobs - they just sat around getting high on their extra money and pumping out more kids who were eventually taken from them because they were born with cocaine in their system. This one woman lost all 4 of her children to the Chicago Foster care system and turned around and had two more...all while on welfare! I can see your point. If we have to piss in a cup to get a job, they should have to piss in a cup once a month to get their welfare checks which OUR tax dollars pay for. Oh and Bonnie, women on welfare DO have insurance...with NO co-insurance, NO co-pay and no reponsibilities...it's called Medicaid. Look it up sometime before...

Is this some sort of joke? He DOESN'T KNOW where he stands on birth control? He is older than dirt and "doesn't really know much about it?" How can you be as old as he is and not know what the hell birth control is and he doesn'r remember how he voted? Why should that matter? Doesn't he have a stand when it comes to women's health? It's okay for old guys to get it up and still be able to get a woman pregnant but NOT okay for her to protect herself from that happening? I don't want this guy in office...he will have us all back to being barefoot and pregnant and ignorant of our own bodies and our rights!! This really just cements my feelings about republicans. They don't care about women or the middle or lower class at all. They only care for the wealthy and those that can buy whatever they want! I JUST SAY NO TO McCAIN!! Women have the right to do what they want with their own bodies and should have full insurance access to birth control and abortion if needed.

Did he just waffle with his votes or does he REALLY NOT REMEMBER WHAT HE DID? That is scary. In either case it shows poor judgment and I wouldn't want him deciding what I can do with my life or body. Does he remember how it's done? We need backing for birth control so there will be less need for abortions. You can spend on birth control or spend to support unwanted children for the rest of their lives!

McCain-brain is simply trying to duck the holy grail of GOP politics that an early fetus is more important than its Mother. Also they dont even want to help the poor allover the world plan their families at a time when our very planet is in peril from overpopulation.

No, I don't believe that Mr. McCain cares about anyone below a certain income level and that would not include someone eligible for low cost or free health benefits for reproductive or any other kind of benefits.

This is truly a sad, but telling moment for John McCain. Any woman who can delude herself about his response deserves him. Without equality and power to control our own bodies/fertility we're the same as muslim countries.

Kathy Wilhelm please note, current regulations do have give a parent who has a child while on aid any additional benefits other than food stamps, if the family income allows for that. And there is no proof that women on aid have more children than a similar women not on aid. This is stereotyping of the worse kind. I worked in the system for 30 years and I can speak from experience.

The way the country is headed that's probably where medicare is headed. Soon, the only ones who will have medical care coverage at all is those who "deserve" it. Nice post Kathy. You're among the bitter who won't do anything but complain! "It's everybody else's fault!"
Yeah to immature Americans!

Wow. Women on welfare have insurance? Think again. Maybe when you have a disability and won't be allowed to work the government will issue you a statement regarding your application "Sorry, we can't feed our own. Thus, we are not going to feed you."
