Obama Presents National Security Team

Today in Washington, President-elect Barack Obama unveiled his national security team, calling for "a new dawn of American leadership."

Here is the lineup:

Senator Hillary Clinton (NY) - Secretary of State
Current Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates - Defense Secretary (will keep his post for now)
Former NATO Commander Gen. James L. Jones - National Security Adviser
Gov. Janet Napolitano (AZ) - Secretary of Homeland Security
Foreign Policy Expert Susan E. Rice - Ambassador to the United Nations
U.S. Attorney and former Judge on the D.C. Superior Court Eric H. Holder, Jr. - Attorney General

Here's a clip from the press release:

And so, in this uncertain world, the time has come for a new beginning - a new dawn of American leadership to overcome the challenges of the 21st century, and to seize the opportunities embedded in those challenges. We will strengthen our capacity to defeat our enemies and support our friends. We will renew old alliances and forge new and enduring partnerships. We will show the world once more that America is relentless in defense of our people, steady in advancing our interests, and committed to the ideals that shine as a beacon to the world: democracy and justice; opportunity and unyielding hope - because American values are America's greatest export to the world.

You can read the full transcript of Obama's speech, as well as bios of each of the new team members on Daily Kos.

What do you think of the new lineup? The Raw Story describes it as a "team of rivals", reflecting his goal of a bipartisan cabinet:

Both choices, Robert Gates to stay on as Defense secretary and James Jones as national security adviser, reflect Mr. Obama's stated desire to build a bipartisan cabinet that is also effective.

In Secretary Gates, Obama chooses a Defense secretary popular with both parties who will temper his ambitious campaign pledge to get out of Iraq in 16 months. The choice of Mr. Jones, a retired Marine general with deep Washington roots, will help Obama to establish his own national security identity in a town wary of his military inexperience.

What do you think? Are you happy about Senator Clinton's new role? What about keeping Gates on as Defense Secretary? Let us know in the comments.

As an Arizonan, I am sorry that we're losing Janet Napolitano as our govenor. But I know she will do an outstanding job as she is a public servant with a conscience.

ReeeeDiculous...You were duped. They are all appointees. Obama's an appointee...The gullibility quotient of the US populace is off the charts. I can't think of anything else to say. Once a month, or so, I just stop by to repeat myself.

I think with Mrs. Clinton, he has made a good choice...my only fear is that by keeping Bush's defense secretary, he will try to convince all that this horrible "war" should continue...definitely something we DON'T need!!!
