Do you remember hearing when JFK was assassinated?

This is taken from the Care2 News Network submitted by Cate Groves.

From the New York Times...

For months, the Bush administration has waged a high-profile campaign, including personal lobbying by President Bush and closed-door briefings by top officials, to persuade Congress to pass legislation protecting companies from lawsuits for aiding the National Security Agency’s warrantless eavesdropping program.

But the battle is really about something much bigger. At stake is the federal government’s extensive but uneasy partnership with industry to conduct a wide range of secret surveillance operations in fighting terrorism and crime.

The N.S.A.’s reliance on telecommunications companies is broader and deeper than ever before, according to government and industry officials, yet that alliance is strained by legal worries and the fear of public exposure. -- read full article

How do you feel about this issue? Do you feel the government needs to have the right to spy on the American people in order to protect us from terrorism? How many of your personal freedoms are you willing to give-up because of fear? Is fear being used to manipulate the American people?

The act was unamerican in a very real sense treason against the people of this country from those who swore to uphold the laws of the land.It should not be allowed to pass those in government and big business who particated in this unforgivable act should be held responsible which they are and pay the ultimate penality what ever that is, but it certainly isn't to sweep it under the rug and compound the crime by saying it was ok and not a thing to be paid for. It is time to stand up and say enough is enough!!

I am so opposed to this administration's decision to once again deny us our constitutional rights. If we are in the middle East to defend our country (weak explanation for a vile, non-sense war) then why is Bush offending our country by trying and often succeeding to rob us of our rights? If this country is not still based on the very document that makes it an extrordinary country, we might as well let any one take it over. I think the part Bush hates in the conatitution the most is: "We the people" This is our country, not his personal game board.

These crimes were committed BEFORE the hysterical 9/11 rush to destroy America's Constitution . . . I guess it is ony a CRIME if some one finds out . . . and you have no powerful friend to EXCUSE your crime - Scooter, Blackwater, AT&T, seems like Family Values in action . . . and the fact OUR Congress is even DEBATING aministy for Corporate Crime is a new low for us.

Agreed, 100%. I didn't pay my phone company to aid the government in spying on me. I paid them to communicate with FRIENDS & FAMILY!

When I found out that AT&T(long distance) and Verizon (local) had cooperated in this invasion of my privacy, I DID NOT PAY MY LAST BILLS! This affected my credit, but it was my own little "Vendetta" -- I dropped landline phone service and got cell phone service.

As far as I can determine, my carrier was not involved in this breach of privacy. If I find out otherwise, I will BREAK MY CONTRACT, and I WILL NOT PAY THE PENALTY!

(Sorry, ALL CAPS is for emphasis. I am boiling mad!)

It was terribly wrong for these telecommuncation companies to agree to allow secret spying on American Citizens. Punish the companies that went along with it.
