U.S. Guards Accused of Shooting Civilians in Iraq

Guards of Blackwater Worldwide, a private security contractor of the U.S. State Department, are being charged with manslaughter. Prosecutors claim that they opened fire on Iraqi civilians and launched a grenade into a school. A sixth guard pleaded guilty last week to shooting an Iraqi. These events took place during a 2007 shooting in Baghdad, which is said to have exacerbated anti-American sentiment. The five guards are claiming self-defense.

From NY Times...

The guards were charged with 14 counts of manslaughter and 20 counts of attempted manslaughter. They are also charged with using a machine gun to commit a crime of violence, a charge that carries a 30-year minimum prison sentence.

The shootings happened in a crowded square where prosecutors say civilians were going about their lives, running errands. Following a car bombing elsewhere in the city, the heavily armed Blackwater convoy sought to shut down the intersection. Prosecutors said the convoy, known by the call sign Raven 23, violated an order not to leave the U.S.-controlled Green Zone.

The soldiers will be tried in Iraqi courts.

DC lawyer Jeffrey Taylor summed up the sentiments of many in the NYT article when he said, "We honor the brave service of the many U.S. contractors who are employed to support the mission of our armed forces in extremely difficult circumstances," Mr. Taylor said. "Today, we honor that service by holding accountable the very few individuals who abused that employment by committing some very serious crimes against dozens of innocent civilians."

If this is carried out..Then the Conspiracy theorists can stop saying "Black Water" Has immunity.
If they had immunity it wouldn't have even gone this far. I hope Justice is served in consideration of the loss of innocent lives.
But then again ..if we went to town and did this we would have been removed a long time ago and I don't think a trial would even be necessary.
How were they defending themselves against a bunch of unarmed civilians?

The tip of the iceberg, but at least it's something.
