Welcome To The Care2 Election Blog

Source: Catherine M
Hi everyone, my name is Catherine Morgan, and I am so happy to be part of the launch of Care2's Election Channel. I'm the founder of Informed Voters and The Political Voices of Women, I'm also a Contributing Editor at BlogHer, and now I am the proud Resident Blogger for this Care2 Election Blog.

I'll be here at the Care2 Election Blog each day with posts on the latest election news, political commentary and, of course, will address campaign issues that are especially important to the Care2 community, with an emphasis on non-profits. Since this is Care2's first blog, I hope to get as much feedback from the members of the community as possible...and I look forward to hearing all of your comments and suggestions (so please...don't be shy).

My goal is to mold this blog into a space where the Care2 community can come together and talk about the election, the candidates, and the issues. This will be a blog unique to Care2 and unlike anything else in the great big blogosphere. I hope you'll want to check it out each day for its changing content, as well as featured articles, and expert guest bloggers from the non-profit community.

So, without further ado...Welcome to the Care2 Election Blog, I hope you'll have a cup of coffee and stay awhile.

I did the vajoe calculator after seeing your link and had dh do it, too. It confirmed both our first-choice candidates from the pool. I'm most in-line with Gravel and dh with Kucinich. I thought it was interesting that we had both already picked out our favorites, for myself based on fairly limited exposure to the candidates. I saw Gravel in some debates a couple months ago and was pretty amazed that he in the Democratic party. Thanks for the link!

Has anyone else done the candidate calculator on vajoe.com? Do you think it explains the issues well and includes all the issues it should? I found it very interesting and helpful.

I'm so tired of party politics with greedy politicians and big corporations running things. We have a great constitution and I am sure that the system was set up with the understanding that only true humanitarians would work in government. At that time, who else would want to. Today, especially in this administration, humanitarians are few and far between. We could feed the hungry of the world with less money than we waste in excess and the war machine every year.
All of the frontrunners on both sides of the fence are typical politicians who spend big money to look good and do what ever it takes to stay in the news. I think with any one of them as president we would just have more of the same in varying degrees. I don't feel that way about Dennis Kucinich though, as far as I can tell, he doesn't owe any favors to big money like the front runners, he's right there on health care and all the important issues. Some of the others talk the talk about the war and global warming etc. but when you look at their voting record you will see they don't walk the walk. They skirt the real issues and try to be popular with everyone, they just want to win…. They are politicians, not humanitarians.
I have to say I like this little guy and when you check him out you'll see he sure wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth like our current leader, quite the opposite. I know it's a long shot but I would like to see a guy like this in the white house for a change. I was very impressed with his wife Elizabeth too.http://www.dennis4president.com/meet-elizabeth/ One of my big concerns is the starving children in Africa who are forced out of their homes by violence caused by government greed. I was happy to see that Elizabeth is right in there on that issue and has been since she was a kid. Looks like a good first lady to me. After you read about Elizabeth, click on About Dennis and read about his life growing up and the things he‘s done. If you like what you see as I do, tell your friends and let’s see what happens in the primaries… We don’t have to let the TV, commercials and news stations tell us who to vote for, we don’t have to vote for the lesser of two evils and we don‘t have to not vote for someone because he probably won‘t win. Vote for character not charisma … Vote for that person you would want working for you. We need true humanitarians, not more of the same. We need someone who will clear a wide path to the development of clean energy, of course we should not be pursuing any nuclear weapons , weapons of mass destruction or nuclear energy for that matter. We should be an example and encourage others to follow, it’s just too damn toxic for the future of this planet. There is probably more power and cleaner energy in nano technology and water then there ever was in petroleum and we can find it if we reach out to all the good people of this world.
I am convinced that 9/11 was a desperate attempt to wake up the American people to what our government is doing in other parts of the world, our foreign policy sucks. We’re the most powerful country they say but we’re backing dictators around the world and countries that are occupying land that does not belong to them. We are one of, if not the largest polluter in the world. I use to be proud to be a gringo…. and I still am, but so ashamed of my government and what we’ve allowed it to do around the world in the name of democracy and freedom. We, now more than ever, need to get this country back on track. I can’t but we can if we back the little guy who’s not afraid to go up against the norm. It should be a prerequisite for anyone wanting to hold public office or work for the federal, state or county governments to be first and foremost humanitarians with a deep desire to serve his fellow man, there are many such people but we won’t find them on the front page and certainly not on Fox News.
Who can we blame for what’s going on besides ourselves ? Who can we look to if we want to change what’s been going on ? No one but ourselves.
I don’t know much about politics and world affairs, but I do know human nature and the natural balance in nature. I am a farmer (organic, of course) and work with the earth and nature on a daily basis and see how it relates to all things large and small. Through this I have learned first hand the truth in the Gaia hypothesis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia_hypothesis and how much we belong to the earth and the earth to us. If we could just follow the little truths and examples that nature has to offer if we just take a moment to look. What I lack in formal education I make up for in instincts and gut feelings. Please think about Dennis Kucinich for president, he is the only one who is not the typical politician

We have before us some pretty exciting challenges and I know we can do some real good if we come together, learn from the earth and make the changes necessary on all levels. So let’s get our constitution back and start from scratch getting our government working for us instead of the other way around. Then we can get busy doing what needs to be done, saving the planet, alternative energy. We need to end war, hunger, poverty and crimes against humanity and the greed that causes it, here and around the world.
Just look at one tiny corn or tomato seed, place it in the warm earth and with a little loving care it will produce many pounds of food and many more seeds. It’s the law of ten fold and it tells us that life was designed to be free and self perpetuating. We need to stop taxing a mans wages, so that we all can become self sufficient with little means.
Then finally we’ll be able to do what it was we came here to do, LIVE, LOVE,LAUGH and be HAPPY……

Catherine--I first registered to vote in 1946, and I've voted in every Federal election since then, not always wisely, perhaps, but I did try! After all this time I've come to the conclusion that our system is totally screwed up! The "debates" are a farce! "Look at ME, everybody! See how I pray!" Television is one culprit, the other is money! I mean MONEY! BIG MONEY! I think that it's time to borrow an idea from the British: limit campaigns to six weeks before the election date, prescribe a fixed dollar amount to campaign spending, the same amount for each would-be candidate, and have the money provided from a government fund. No more Big Oil, Big Auto, Big Party slush funds! The First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech, not freedom of the almighty dollar! OK, so maybe Dennis doesn't stand a chance--I love him anyway! I live in NH and have gotten in the mail many beautifully printed color brochures touting many of the candidates - Obama, Clinton, Guiliani, Romney, and others - my feeling is that this money could have been profitably spent helping those like myself who are struggling to make ends meet, keep a car driving, buy oil for keeping warm this winter - forget about Christmas presents those are totally out of the question. So far the only candidate who has not sent out numerous costly printed items is Kuchicnich and I probably am not spelling his name correctly as he has not buried me with costly printed flyers that promote his name. I am outraged by the waste of time, money and good sense that this represents - and as far as I am concerned these are strong anti-candidate messages - is there a candidate who hasn't sent out expensive puff pieces and can I vote for whoever that is???

Honestly, tell me what is the difference between a Republican and a Democrat? Both sides agree with each other on most things, then they disagree with each other on some thing and we switch back and forth every few years and we have not gained anything. I have not seen either side really do anything for the American Citizens. Again I ask, what is the difference between a Republican and Democrat? I wish I could register has an American and vote in ALL the Primaries so that I could at least think I was getting the "best of the bests" on the ticket. I am registered but I now hate being "tied" to one party. Why even have parties?? We know what is right or wrong and should be able to support any canidate in any party at the primary level.... That way, maybe we will get the "right" people in office.

So, how do we get people like DK & MG inclouded in the debates? Do we call the other candidates? The debate organizers? Or do a Care-2 petition? Or what?

I would like to see all the candidates in the same debate: Dems, Rebubs, Greens, Libertarians, etc. Everyone there at the same time, answering the same questions, etc.

Hi David, Bill, and Barbara. I'm glad to see the the conversation is starting. We are obviously going to have a lot to talk about between now and the election.

*To the people asking about Ron Paul...I just got a little nugget -- Ron Paul will be appearing on Glenn Beck next Tuesday. Should make for interesting TV.

Bill,
I agree! Why would I only want to see only six of the candidates for the democrats in the debate? I am really MAD! I wanted to email the Des Moines Register (who apparently made the decision) to voice my anger but they have yet to confirm my registration so I can give feedback. My candidate may only represent a small percentage of voters but I still want him to be heard! I am just disgusted!
