Did President Obama break a campaign promise by choosing a purebred dog as the family's new pet?

I don't care either way.
He broke his promise by not rescuing a mutt.
He kept his word. Bo is technically considered a "rescue" dog.

They rescued both of their dogs.

Bo and Sunny were both returned to the breeders by their original families and only then adopted by the Obamas. That is why Bo was over six months old and Sunny was over one year old when adopted by the First Family.

Believe it or not, purebred dogs need homes, too. The Obamas have a family problem with pet allergies, which is why they are committed to Portuguese water dogs, which have low dander and don't shed much.

Speaking of breeders and purebreds, Bo is neutered and I presume Sunny is spayed. The Obamas also made donations to their local Humane Society shelter in each dog's name at the time they were adopted.
