United Airlines may start forcing obese individuals to pay for 2 seats or get bumped. Is this reasonable?

And Mandeep, I agree with your view that we all need to be more tolerant of others, but I think we all need to be more empathetic also. I don't think you realize that people protest strong perfumes not because they don't like the smell, but because they actually cause migraines to some individuals. I am one of the many people on this planet sensitive to perfumes; I can't wear it and if I'm in an enclosed area, such as a plane or an elevator, with someone wearing too much perfume, I literally end up with a three-day migraine because of it. I understand the world isn't a fair place, but is it anyone's right to make others sick?

I don't think it's ok to bump anyone for any reason. Airlines should have an obese section because it makes it uncomfortable for the overweight individual AND his/her neighbors otherwise. Not sure if charging them more would be fair or not; it is extra weight and space, so it might be fair. But bumping because you overbook is always wrong and singling out overweight individuals because it's easier to justify (in their minds) is bulls**t.

No, we just need to learn to be more tolerant as individuals.
I have sat next to obese individuals and yes it can be uncomfortable but that's life, may be he or she hates the perfume I'm wearing and has to endure it too.
Better still we should all be charged half price on plane tickets since the seats are only getting smaller and smaller

Yes this is. I had to sit next to a morbidly obese man on a 7 hour flight. He was so big that he couldn't put the arm rest down between me and him and his hug leg was taking up half of my seat. I was pushed into the aisle and was constantly being knocked by other passengers and the food and drink cart. It was a horrible flight, all because the man was too big and taking up half of my space and half of the lady on the other side of him too. We both had a terrible flight and as far as I'm concerned I only had half a seat, although I paid for a full one. I certainly took it up with the airline and on my return flight, after much complaining on my part, they gave me an aisle seat with the middle seat empty. I think all airlines should make all obese people pay for two seats, as they obviously need them, and other passengers should not have to suffer because of them, especially on long flights.
