I'd take the couple hundred dollars I'm paying per month on my student loans now and spend it on a nice new car. That would be good for the economy, right?
I don't really agree with people who say "If you forgive student loans, kids never learn responsibility, they'll never learn budgeting," etc. Every single person I know who got a job right out of college is aggressively paying off their loans. The only people I know who are deferring their loans or having trouble making payments are those who have been unable to find a job--not for lack of responsibility, but simply due to this economy. It would be a simple way to help people who need it the most. Plus, it's not like credit card debt, which many people have accumulated due to irresponsible money management and impulsive buying. Student loans are an investment in your education.
I don't think people's loans should be completely eliminated, because that would be unfair to those who have worked hard to pay back their loans and have finished (I was seventeen when my stepfather finally finished paying off his undergraduate student loans!). But I do think some kind of help or forgiveness in this area would be much appreciated to those in trouble.
