You could say that the youth of 50 years ago were very invested in social justice, civil rights, anti-war protesting, the environmental movement, and so on.

Or you could say they were a bunch of narcissists who followed their experimentation with "free love" and cults and drug abuse with the crass materialism and moral oblivion that led them to overwhelmingly elect Ronald Reagan.

"Young people today" worked hard trying to keep us out of war in the Middle East, and to elect Barack Obama. They hold massive rallies for the environment and free speech. They created "hacktivism" and "clicktivism." They optimistically rallied for fair elections in Iran and Egypt and created the brief moment of hope known as the Arab Spring.

And they really like big parties.
