If they ask about it, yes. Telling them that the goldfish ran away from home only works up to a certain age.

When it comes up naturally, such as seeing a dead bug. You only say that the bug can't walk or fly ever again. They start to understand the permanence of death. You do not mention animals or people. Starting with peripheral things that the child doesn't love or have an attachment to is the way to go.
