i think it's safer when they are! but some friends have said how much their cats love to go out so i don't want to deprive theirs of that. luckily my cat doesn't like the outdoors--runs up the stairs about as soon as i let her out. i'm pretty grateful for that because it means i don't have to worry so much about her. once somebody accidentally left the front door open and i was terrified when i felt the cold air downstairs because i could just tell what had happened. i went upstairs and closed the door though, and my cat was just sitting on a chair at the kitchen table perfectly safe. i'm so glad she has no interest in wandering as i'm told there's a "mystery cat" (mountain lion) around these parts
