Absolutely. The public schools here begin sex ed in 3rd grade and it continues into high school though not every single year. I had to sign permission and parents were permitted to view the material/videos prior to the start. The introductory year was superficial birds & bees, just enough to give a hint of an idea. Each year grew more in-depth. Like it or not, our babies were growing: their bodies were changing and they would be exposed to sexual content that begged explanation. It is pretty well published that parents are advised to have 'the oral sex talk' when kids are transitioning from elementary to middle school [shocker]. Many parents were not comfortable with that. That landmark is established for a reason: for their protection, to equip tweens with the knowledge and scripting they needed to handle situations. In middle school the sex ed became more focused and preventive. There was one girl that did get pregnant, but the numbers were improving. The goal is to arm students with realistic, accurate information to counteract what they hear from ill-informed classmates or read online at disreputable sites. One constant theme taught was RESPECT. The students are equipped with the knowledge to be able to comprehend human sexuality and the vocabulary to express themselves. This builds confident young adults.

Both School and parents should do this. I know that with parents it is such a taboo thing but it is nature.
