Seeing your pet killed is genuinely emotionally distressing! Is it "legally" distressing? What does that mean? If it means some terrorist cop just shot your dog in front of you, or some thug just lit your kitten on fire in front of you, or some hateful creep just swerved his care to intentionally hit your cat while you were watching, yes, I'd call it "legally" emotional distress but it's always genuine emotional distress.
