It's highly likely that our senses act as different transmitters/receivers of forms of communication; it then comes down to high developed our sense are as to what we pick up/perceive.

Definitely. My kitty Johnnie makes very distinct meows depending on what is going on. The variance in pitch and tone can mean nothing other than communication. It's humorous at the time, but I have no doubt it means something to him. One day we'll be able to understand animals' vocalizations and realize how ignorant and backwards we were for so many centuries when we couldn't understand the language of animals.
