I preserve by canning, freezing, dehydrating whatever is available throughout the year

No, but my grandparents did. Anything edible that grew in the garden and yard was used during the winter months.

usually not, but last year we had an amazing harvest of apples from our 1 tree so my wife did freeze a bunch after peeling and cutting into pieces...then had delicious apple pies in mid-winter and spring....
