They make excellent pets! Just be sure to take care of them -- they're a little more high maintenance than a cat.

When my son was 7 I finally relented to his request to have a hamster, but there were conditions. He had to look after it and clean the cage; he had to pay for the food out of his pocket money, and most importantly he had to do jobs to earn enough for the equipment we would need. I thought this might put him off, but it didn't and he pestered me for jobs for 4 weeks until he had enough money saved! He chose one particular little hamster straight away and had named him Peanut before we left the store. Peanut lived with us for 3 years, and in all that time I only ever had to clean the cage twice; once when he went to visit his dad for a month, and the other time when he had chicken pox. The little creature used to sit happily on his shoulder while he did his homework, and often appeared poking it's nose out of his pocket. We both adored him and it was a huge blow when he eventually died, but he was more than worth every penny and every second of his short life, and I believe he taught my little boy some very valuable lessons about responsibility, love and the reality of death. I never regretted giving in to his wish, or the conditions I laid down from the start!!! My 7 year old grandson wants a hamster now, and I was amused and very proud to hear his dad set out the exact same conditions to his son that I gave him!

Little animals don't last long, but most importantly, they still need food, water,a clean home, and toys. When a child loses interest (3 days ) is the average, then it's a shame. She wanted a dog and begged for 2 years. Lol. Husband relented when she was 14. She moved out 4 years later and never thought about the dog again. You should love animals not just like them.Learn from my life lesson.People who discard animals with a cavalier "someone will take care of it " attitude, feel the same way about the people in their lives.

My daughter begged for a gerbil.Hubby let her have and indulged her, shopping for a whole set-up.She didn't earn it .I disagreed with the entire notion. Spoiled. It didn't last long.
