I used to frequently sneak in a bit more when my stepfather tipped.

Heidi asks, "Why hide it?" Because it avoided hurting his feelings or starting an argument or turning his regular treat of lunches out into "a thing" with diminished enjoyment all around.

I will say that whether I added to his tips or not, he was literally beloved by waiters and bus staff at every restaurant he visited, so my "extra" was unnecessary in that sense. My mom and I frequently run into restaurant staff who love to reminisce when they see us and still get misty-eyed ten years after his death. I wish I had that effect on people!
