It depends on the situation.

For example, I have family members who currently have one senior parent living with them while another parent is in an assisted living home nearby.

It also depends on the physical and financial resources of the caregiver. Is he or she living alone? Is he or she able to give up the workday to be a stay-at-home caregiver?

I have an unmarried friend who gave up his career to move back to his hometown when his mother became ill. He was cut off from most of his social life, living alone with a terminally ill and clinically depressed person for many years before she died. He was the only child of a widow, so there was no one to share the burdens of care. He couldn't even have a pet.

Should someone have to sacrifice so much before we consider him or her "a good child" or a "responsible" and "caring" person?
