When I was in elementary school, we had physical fitness assessments which were part of a nationwide program. (Remember the President's Council on Physical Fitness? Or whatever it was called when you were young?)

Our parents most certainly were informed by the school of our performance on those tests, and were expected to help us if we needed to improve.

Schools should still be teaching games at recess, and physical education as a part of the curriculum. The fact that not all schools have recess, and not all schools have P.E. class, in a time when there is an acknowledged "epidemic" of childhood obesity, is patently idiotic. Just sending a note home is not enough.
