This five inch (12 cm) long Cecropia Moth caterpillar (Hyalophora cecropia) sports a series of red, blue and yellow club-like spines to confuse and scare off predators. In late summer, the fattened caterpillar will spin a sturdy, brown cocoon where it will remain during the freezing winter. Inside the cocoon, the larva will undergo metamorphosis to emerge in the spring as North America's largest moth, with a wingspan of 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm).
