Polar bear cubs face many dangers during their first year. At an early age, cubs are taught by their mother to stay close. Females with cubs generally avoid adult male bears who sometimes attack the young and eat them. Highly protective female bears often drive off much larger male bears. Females have been known to fight to the death to protect their cubs. - photographer, Dan Guravich.
