| An endangered Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta) swims through the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Despite conservation efforts, Loggerhead populations continue to decline due to poaching, entanglement / drowning in fishing nets, and pollution. From May through August Loggerheads lay 100-125 eggs in nests on the beaches of the south-eastern USA and the Mexican gulf coast. Interestingly, sex determination in hatchlings is temperature dependent. The average adult Loggerhead is roughly 3 feet (39 cm) long and weighs 250 pounds (113 kg). |
