Matschie's tree kangaroos are found in mountainous tropical rain forests in central and eastern New Guinea. With heavy, curved claws for climbing, they can leap 30 feet downward to nearby trees and jump to the ground from a height of up to 60 feet without injury.

Matschie's tree kangaroos are small, only 20 to 30 inches in body length, with a tail ranging from 17 to 36 inches. The tree kangaroo's body color is black, red or mahogany, while its face, stomach and feet are yellow. Its diet consists of leaves, vines, herbs and other vegetation, in addition to fruit.
