| Woodland Caribou (tarandus caribou) once ranged from New England to the boreal forests of Canada and Alaska. Today, the species is considered Endangered, and survives in limited ranges throughout Canada. Unlike their barren-ground Caribou cousins which migrate in herds of several thousand individuals, Woodland Caribou live in bands of 5 to 15 members. Caribou have specially adapted crescent-shaped hooves that both protect their feet from cold and facilitate walking in snow. Caribou are unique in the deer family in that both males and females have antlers. |
