| This Barred Owl (Strix varia) is a permanent resident of the Treehouse Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Illinois, US. Though female, she apparently does not mind her masculine given name, 'Jake'. She was shot while in her nest as a baby, but now acts as a foster parent for other orphaned owls. Barred Owls can be found in mature forests throughtout the northern US states and southern Canada. Their distinctive call is often described as sounding like "who cooks for you, who cooks for you?". The Barred Owl is a close cousin of the endangered Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis). |
