Michigan City East Pier Light was constructed in 1904 after the pier's extension was completed. The smaller breakwater light in the photograph was built later in 1911. The structure was framed in steel, lined with brick, and exterior encased in steel plates. The lighthouse housed a very large steam powered fog horn. Al Capone was a frequent boater past the light, since he often left Chicago on boat vs. car for his own safety.
