When populations of lemmings (arctic rodents) crash, snowy owls may move south in large numbers from their arctic tundra home to southern Canada and the northern United States in search of small mammals. This snowy owl was photographed near Duluth, Minnesota during an "invasion" of these and other owl species into that area in the winter of 1977-78.
