These two yellow-bellied marmots were photographed near Yosemite National Park in California. Marmots are really large ground squirrels and six species are found in North America.. Yellow-bellied marmots are found in the western United States and southwestern Canada where they are most common in high elevation meadows with rock outcrops.

Unlike their eastern relative, the woodchuck, western marmots may hibernate for as much as eight months in some areas, and would not dream of leaving their high elevation dens as early as February 1st!
