The northern white rhinoceros, also known as the northern square-lipped rhinoceros, is one of the most endangered animals in Africa. This gray-colored animal is only found in Zaire. The northern white rhinoceros is very agile and can gallop up to 25 miles per hour. It's preferred habitat is open grassland and savanna with access to water. The decline of northern white rhino populations is attributed to hunting and poaching for its horns. Breeding of captive stock is critical to preserving the reduced populations as is continued upgrading of its protected habitat.
