The mountain gorilla, the world's largest primate, is the most endangered of the three gorilla subspecies. Only several hundred survive in the forested mountain slopes of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda. The population seemed to have stabilized in recent years, due in part to improved park management and the influx of money from nature tourism. But several gorillas were killed in the civil war in Rwanda, and the war eliminated tourism.
