Edward VII, whilst entertaining, once offered someone a cigar and, without thinking, the honoured guest replied, "Oh I only smoke on special occasions!"
What a faux pas...

However, Edward VII always had the last laugh when entertaining, especially at Sandringham House in Norfolk as he used to keep a diary of the weight of each guest when they arrived - who would dare refuse?

I wonder if they were allowed to take their coat and shoes off first?

More interestingly, I wonder if it would catch on as a tradition amongst friends or whether that would be one sure way to lose them.....
