I met these two little Burmese children in the shade of a cargo dock in the capital city Yangon in 1996. The little boy kept me, and a group of curious vagabonds, entertained by running around laughing and jumping into the cool muddy waters below. The girl is wearing a yellowish paste on her face made from ground Sandlewood and oils. Nearly every girl in Burma wears the face paste to protect her skin from the sun and provide a pleasant aroma all day long. The Burmese people are some of the most warm and welcoming I have ever met, despite their decades of hardship under authoritarian rule. -- photographer, Raymond Paynter.
