Friends,

Please visit:  forum18.org for more detailed information. Please lift up Zaur Balaev, TCM student, from Aliabad, Azerbaijan. Here’s a brief glimpse:

The lawyer for imprisoned Baptist pastor Zaur Balaev is hopeful about his appeal, which began at Sheki Appeal Court today (6 September) and resumes on 19 September. “Of course I’m optimistic,” Gazalfar Rzaev told Forum 18 News Service. Also hopeful that the two year sentence imposed on charges of assaulting five police officers will be overturned was Ilya Zenchenko, head of Azerbaijan’s Baptist Union. But he fears Balaev may not be fully exonerated. “This is a dilemma for the court. Clearing Balaev would mean incriminating the police officers who falsely testified against him,” Zenchenko told Forum 18. The State Committee for Work with Religious Organisations insists the prosecution had nothing to do with Balaev’s religious affiliation but refused to explain why the verdict speaks of Balaev’s “illegal religious activity” when the concept does not exist in Azerbaijani law. “This case has given a bad impression of Azerbaijan around the world,” an official of the OSCE in Baku told Forum 18. The persecution of Christians in this world is simply astounding. There are cases of such activity documented every single day. Pray for the Body of Christ to continue putting her hope in Jesus. Pray for her witness in the midst of persecution. Pray for those who persecute and for their salvation.

Police Storm Mosque, Expelling & Beating-up Muslims for Speaking Out for Christians
Police today have twice forcibly expelled Muslims from a 1,000 year old Baku mosque that the authorities want to turn into a carpet museum, and tried to impose a new Imam on the community. However, community members were allowed back into the mosque for afternoon prayers, before being expelled again. The police attack was observed by Ambassador Steinar Gil of the Royal Norwegian Embassy, as well as diplomats from the British and US embassies, as well as the OSCE. Ambassador Gil told Forum 18 that the Muslims "behaved very calmly and with restraint, doing nothing to provoke further violence", and other witnesses told Forum 18 News Service that the police beat some community members up. The authorities' attempt to impose their own imam on the mosque community failed. The current imam, Ilgar Ibrahimoglu, is strongly disliked by the authorities for his religious freedom and human rights campaigning for Christians and Muslims.
