Open Doors Helps an Indonesian Pastor in Distress
Local officials ordered a pastor to visit the district office; when he arrived he was surprised to see that members of the Forum Komunikasi Umat Beragama (FKUB), Inter-Religious Harmony Forum, were also present. The reason for the meeting was quickly revealed; in one official’s hand was a petition ordering his church to be closed because it was located in a Muslim-majority area.

Dear Donna

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, he is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by a stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. Jeremiah 17:20

Church Sealed in Indonesia Worshippers Forced to Hold Services Outdoors

Since April 11, the Gereja Kristen Indonesia (GKI) Taman Yasmin Church in Bogor, West Java has been forced to hold its services on the roadside in front of their sealed church in stifling heat. The church pastor, Rev. Ujang Tanusaputra, told Compass News that the church had received an official building permit from the Bogor city government. The construction was going smoothly until a Muslim group began demonstrating, so the government quickly sealed the building to appease them. Although the church brought a lawsuit against the mayor’s sealing, and won, the congregation is still not permitted to worship in the building, which is 80 percent completed.

On June 20, Compass visited the church’s Sunday worship gathering, where about 200 people met in a service limited to one hour, with around 100 policemen present. Tanusaputra said he hopes the Lord will intervene to show that Indonesia is a country where laws are followed and all faiths may worship freely. “We [will] continue worshipping by the roadside as part of the struggle to remove the seal,” he told Compass.

Despite having the largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia is a secular republic. Islamists, however, continue to incite violence against Christians and use legal means to oppress the church. Church closures by fundamental Muslim groups have been an ongoing problem in Indonesia. During the 63 years of the country’s life as an independent state, at least 1,100 churches have been revoked, attacked, or shut down.

Father, we ask for your mercy and favor to be upon the Christians in Indonesia, so they may worship you freely. This week, as we celebrated our nation’s freedoms in America, we pray for the same freedoms for our Christian brethren in Indonesia. Father, today we pray specifically for the churches’ doors in West Java to be re-opened, and for the government and Muslim organizations to cease in their opposition to Christianity. Lord, please bring hope and peace to Indonesian Christians as they stand against growing aggressions; bring them into a deeper trust in You and Your love.

Praying with you,

The Prayer Force Team

Uncertainty during Christmas INDONESIA - While most churches are busy completing plans for their worship services, some churches are wondering if they can even observe Christmas at all since their regular places of worship have been forcefully closed to religious services.  Such is the case of a Baptist church in Bekasi, West Java. On November 21, local officials demanded that it stop all religious activities and restore the worship center to its original business function a home used as a store.

“We do not know what to do or what to say to our congregation. We were really taken by surprise,” said Baptist church’s mission department head, Bagus Widyatmo.

Besides the Baptist church, more than 30 other churches in 2008 faced similar problems such as having their permits revoked, shut down or demolished. The reasons for closure ranged from lack of worship permits to land disputes.  Read more about church closures in Indonesia from Open Doors’ most recent press release.       [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

Islamic Extremists' Protests Lead to Church Closures - Compass Direct News
Protests from Islamic extremists have stopped worship services at two churches in Sumatra and Java Island, Indonesia. According to Compass Direct News, "Love Evangelical Bethel church, near Pekanbaru, Riau province on Sumatra Island ceased Sunday services after about 60 demonstrators from local mosques on February 15 demanded its closure." The Compass report added the protesters, led by Harry Cahyono and Victor Ramaddan, said they were protesting the church because it did not have a permit for expansion. Compass said, "They (the protesters) wrote, 'do not build without permit' in red paint on the church wall." Rev. Alex Ritonga told Compass his church was the only church in a village of 14 mosques, none of which have permits. He added his church was registered with local Religious Affairs authorities and had been told they were not required to have permits to expand the building. These recent protests against churches in Indonesia are the latest in pressure against believers to stop worshipping. Several churches were closed in 2007. Pray God protects Christians in Indonesia. Ask God to give them creative ways to continue worshipping even though their churches have been closed. Joshua 1:9

Shock as Three Christian School Girls in Indonesia are Beheaded Extreme violence and persecution against Christians in Indonesia has taken a new dramatic turn at the weekend as three Christian school girls were barbarically beheaded by masked attackers.
by Daniel Blake
Posted: Monday, October 31, 2005, 22:13 (GMT)

Extreme violence and persecution against Christians in Indonesia has taken a new dramatic turn at the weekend as three Christian school girls were barbarically beheaded by masked attackers.

The shocking news has stunned the region, and is the latest in a long line of religious attacks in the country.

The three girls were attending a private Christian school in the highly tense province of Central Sulawesi. The three were attacked by unidentified assailants, and a fourth girl was left seriously wounded.

Police in the region commented that sickeningly one of the girl’s heads was taken and placed by the attackers in front of a new Christian church, and the other two taken and placed outside the police station.

Latest reports have indicated that the country is significantly increasing the police presence in the region following the attack, in which the girls were killed with machetes as they walked to school near Poso.

I recently received this e-mail from a Christian who is an eyewitness
of some of the persecution directed towards Christians in Indonesia by
the muslim population:

On May '98, the worst riot has occurred in Jakarta and
hundreds of Chinese were killed without mercy (such as burning alive
with gasoline etc). At the time of the riot, the fire and smoke is
every where just 500 meters from my house, at the east, north and south
of my neighbourhood. But I could sense that there were millions of War
Angels that God Jesus sent to keep us, His people who living here in

Now, in this moment, our Christian brothers and sisters in Ambon -
Maluku, were in great danger, they are killed and accused by the
moslems (includes the army and government). And until today (05 March
99) they are still in the trouble.

Back in 20 January 1999, Pastor and Christians students in Ambon -
Maluku were attacked by the moslem mobs, the pastor's hands were
cutted, and then he was burned by gasoline. His student were killed
with knife by taking his stomach inside out of his body. From more than
100 Christian students, almost all were killed, except two or maybe
three who survive.

One of them who survive is a man, the moslem mob cut her neck (head)
until it was apart. But he testified that he saw an angel of God
coming, and put back his head on his neck, and at the moment, he just
fine and laying alive in hospital, even he could talk and testified,
but he may not turn his head because it could be bleeding. The doctors
just could not believe what they saw.

Please pray for the persecuted church in Indonesia, and pass the word
about the travesty of justice and human rights. For more information
about the situation there:

Indonesia - The Sword will not Separate September 06, 2007 2:32 PM

The Sword will not Separate

Brought to you by The Voice of Martyrs

From the left side, Noviana Malewa may look like any other 15-year-old girl. In her eyes you see a sadness and a strength much too deep for any girl her age.

In October 2005, Noviana and three other teenagers were taking a small footpath on the way to their Christian high school near Poso, Indonesia. Suddenly, from out of the jungle, sprang six masked men in all black, wielding machetes. Noviana fought bravely, but was struck across the side of her face and neck with a machete. She fell to the ground and rolled down into a ravine. Above, she heard her friends screaming. Just when she was about to lose hope, a van of soldiers appeared and took her to a hospital.

Noviana was the only survivor that day. After the attack, she was hidden in a Christian village and guarded by police because her testimony was needed in court. The radical Muslims who had killed her friends were still looking for her. It was even too dangerous for her to attempt a hospital visit.

After months of negotiation to guarantee her safety, VOMedical was finally able to arrange transportation to a hospital in Surabaya, Indonesia. While in hiding VOMedical will continue follow-up treatment.
