A drop of wisdom in our cup of tea~

An honor to be asked! John B.!    Thanks for inviting me to the senior's group, where our experiences offer the wisdom of everyone's life journey.  Money can't buy true wisdom.  Looking forward to the gifts of those who have some history to share and dreams of the soul that have been enriched by this wonderful mystery of life!!!  I believe the best is always ahead of us, and most especially our spiritual best*  Dot A

well, I'm not quite a "senior citizen" but am getting there quickly as the years roll by. Thanks, John. I look forward to meeting everyone here. And, like Dot, I think the best is yet to come and the best is yet to be

What is a Senior ?

At my website done my daughter (www.burlingtonseniorcenter), a senior can be 50 plus when involved in Senior Sports, 55 plus when playing softball, and 50 plus when doing Senior Center activities with many exceptions. My grandson (18) comes to play Pinochle. The ladies love him. We have one board member under 50. What is a Senior ?

Thanks for the invite John.

A senior can be many things and most desirable these days for a senior of retirement age, good health and a comfortable income.

I can definitely relate to all that.

A happy senior can often include a computer these days!

We seem to rely more and more on our computers for staying in contact with family and friends and it can be a good source of entertainment.

How old are you?

If I didn't know how old I am, I would in any case be as old as I am now.
What is now, is definitely now.
When you get older you feel younger than you really are and when you're young - you always want to be or feel older.

Seniors are rich in 'Being Wonderful'

Had to laugh with you Pam W, on the 'young 10 years old' and the dramatic change of being a painfully old '11 year old' and >>> what a genius you are to see the relative closeness of any age~  depends so much on our "feelings" and what is either irritating or exhilarating,.... lol.  Learning to walk as a baby must have been a doozy.  Being able to evaluate stuff from more experience of age is a mixed bag, but better than being oblivious to so much 'garbage'.

And Helmut H, Nicely said, the mind looks upon the grass on the other side of the street and can't see the weeds or the yellowing blades from the distance, Yep, the comparison game can trick the mind into a fit of discontinent. We can flip reality any way we want, and when it comes down to it, we find acceptance in the Now - a good Age.

Are you getting spooked(?)~ You know it's nearly Spooky Day and all kinds of wierdness will be crawling out of the woodwork, even more than the ordinary weirdness,.... Hahaha, BOO!  Time has speeded up by decades since the 50's when it took 10 years for Christmas to come around.  Spooky*   And the costumes have become really creepy scary bizzarrrrO, which the kids are so happy to dress up and freak out the world!  [ Just watching tv has gotten a whole lot scarier than those long ago family hour shows,... ]  However, the world is suppose to change.  We are better when we learn to adapt.  Keeping the good stuff to enhance the evolution of cultural change can be a bit of a challenge.  The more we learn and the more we love, the better we can make things.  It's a combo kind of deal.  Information+Intelligence (seniors have the edge because experience teaches what books cannot ) adding the wisdom of the human heart that understands from compassion and a generous spirit, we can make every occasion better for the whole group, including our own selves.

It's fun to share stories - add laughter - give attention to those growing up -

and just observe as we flow along with the day's energy.  I like these pictures because they reveal the fun that continues in us as we move through each phase of living.  When we were just little bumkins we were vulnerable to the scary things - now we offer comfort to those who may need us when the witches brew gets too strong.  Wishing you a drop of whipped cream on your pumpkin pie.  Enjoy, enjoy *ENJOY*

I took the test too, Dot, and mine came out Mississippi. I have never been there.

I don't think I would be happy there though because I am very liberal, even progressive and Mississippi is a red state in presidential elections (as is Arizona, the state in which I live now).

While I grew up in the New York Metropolitan area, I was Republican but for most of my adult life, I have been a Democrat.

This cheesehead belongs in Georgia with Dot.

I am proud to say I have no political affiliation. I have voted for both democrats and republicans. I will continue to do so in the future as well. As I wear many hats in my life, it seems that I do the same in my political philosphies. With that said, any Friends of Senior Centers posts that go over the edge in political pronouncements within this group will be deleted by the host.

who is to say what is over the edge? i think we old people here are not hotheaded enough to think our opinions are the only way of looking at things and as long as we aren't verbally attacking anyone including each other i think we can deal with it maturely. imo.

thought i had commented on this mood test thing. i don't think it is meant to be taken too seriously, like a mood ring. we are all much to complicated for that! i forget what state i was told i would like, but i didn't believe it. i know i like new england, my home state, pennsylvania, and new jersey where i spent some happy  childhood days...i'll stick with that!

i tend toward being liberal...maybe even socialist...i hear that isn't such a dirty word any more and if i HAD to catagorize myself according to religious/philisophical beliefs, i'd say i'm agnostic because "i don't KNOW" any more than anyone else does. but i don't like being catagorized. i like socializing with anyone i happen to like whether we agree on a lot of stuff or not as long as we don't HAVE to agree on a lot of stuff. i do have a preference for the way young children think...not bogged down by a lot of preconcieved notions yet. i think a good sense of humor and fun and an empathy for others is a good start.

another thing i like about children, especially under 5 years old is they they aren't much into ego and they are very forgiving and they do have a sense of humor. i really miss children since i've retired! there ae children in all the states and i think one could find kindred spirits in any of the states.

poetry smoetry - live life with 'GO-etry' and remember to find happiness in the momentry,...

Just an itty bitty poem

make no mistake

happiness is more than cake

it has no empty calories

and does not replace our salaries

happiness is running wild

cannot be tamed, yet still is mild

you might catch it like a cold

and you could keep it 'till you're old

or maybe you'd like to snatch it up

and have it in your coffee cup

but happiness is not like that

it can't be owned, much like a cat,...

it can show up on a face

or gallop like a horse’s race

but definitions aren’t necessary

happiness may be easy, or contrary

it doesn't fit inside a shoe

or anything else that belongs to you

it is as free as rain and huckleberries

and dances like the wind in January

but don't look for it over there

or think it’s a secret that’s far too rare

our experience with happiness

floats as a butterfly over the fence

if you missed those wings today

be sure you catch ‘em another day

it comes without a ribbon or bow

and helps to lift you when you’re low

cause happiness enjoys your smile

and so wants to stay with you awhile

just look beyond the evening news

for many stories create the blues

happiness cannot be measured

it's life's abundant, invisible treasure

everyone you meet today

will seek their happiness in their own way

offer what you can most kindly

for each of us are walking blindly

for what we're missing is true sight

yet, sharing it brings in the light

in the sweet dreams of a child's pure heart

that's the place where happiness starts

I was maybe 5 or 6 when I heard those drums pounding across the way.  In a little while others would gravitate to the sound of the beat to see the Memorial Day parade that was winding its way across the city's main streets.  People looked on in solemn faces, as it hadn't been so very long ago that our country was at war.  People gave their lives so that this little kid, myself, and all others of this free nation could walk over to see this spectacle and feel safe, and know peace, and have pride for a strong nation.  Not a perfect nation.  There is no such thing.  Yet, as my mind experienced many facts over the years, it's become more and more meaningful what such a celebration actually represents to not only this nation, but, every person who seeks life's best, and desires a safe place to be, and works towards the blessings of living well and doing good in life.  The United States of America is an orchestration of many factors, coming together, working with one another, fighting for the rights and opportunities that every soul longs to experience.  While change is inevitable, and our nation faces a new kind of battle, I am still hearing the drum beat of generations of brave souls who've died for the love of county, brotherhood, and a fair-minded government.  It is always a challenge.  Some people are not as altruistic regarding other's well-being.  I suppose that the reason is based in fear.  The mind that fears others cannot feel the joys of freedom because it is plagued with dark imaginings.  Of course, it is intelligent to be aware, to foresee dangers, to think ahead regarding vulnerable situations, no doubt about that!  Yet, if our thoughts are overwrought with oppression towards anyone else, or in subjugation because of the actions which bring down our own existence, well, it is this kind of problem we must fight to correct.  Our minds are above the survival mode of Dinosaurs.  We can solve problems with our intelligence and our sense of fairness, and the power of our compassionate actions.   We can fight for goodness.   We do not wish to war.  Yet, those who died in our battle for what is good must be honored and remembered, for it was their wish to bring about peace.  I am humbled by all those who fought, those who gave their life, and those who suffered the hell of war that I and many others could be free.   The drums are still beating, and we must pray that such terrible sacrifices and atrocities from past wars will not be accepted in the future, as we enjoy our freedoms, as much as possible, and continue to work to make this world a better place for every ONE!  Memorial Day is upon us, and we are inspired by all the love it represents.  Memorial Day is our reminder to do better as this world carries on.  Memorial Day is a day when our tears represent the past sorrows and the greatest hopes of this world's future.   Amen.

You Are

WHAT YOU OWN IS NOT WHO YOU ARE...Stuff really is just stuff, and it has absolutely no bearing on who you are as a person.  Most of us can make do with much less than we think we need.  That’s a valuable reminder, especially in a hugely consumer-driven culture that focuses more on material things than meaningful connections and experiences.* Find the strength to fill your time with meaningful experiences.  The space and time you are occupying at this very moment is LIFE, and if you’re worrying about other famous faces, then you are disempowered.  You’re giving your life away to marketing and media trickery, which is created by big companies to ultimately motivate you to want to dress a certain way, look a certain way, and be a certain way.  This is tragic, this kind of thinking.  What is real is YOU and your friends and your family, your loves, your highs, your hopes, your plans, your fears, etc.Too often we’re told that we’re not important, we’re just peripheral to what is. * “Get a degree, get a job, get a car, get a house, and keep on getting.”  And it’s sad, because someday you’ll wake up and realize you’ve been tricked.  And all you’ll want then is to reclaim your mind by getting it out of the hands of manipulative media that wants to turn you into the perfect consumer that buys everything that isn’t needed to impress everyone that isn’t important. It’s a hamster wheel, think about it.”

You Have It!

EVERYTHING CHANGES, EVERY SECOND

Embrace change and realize it happens for a reason.  It won’t always be obvious at first, but in the end it will be worth it.

What you have today may become what you had by tomorrow.  You never know.  Things change, often spontaneously.  People and circumstances come and go.  Life doesn’t stop for anybody.  It moves rapidly and rushes from calm to chaos in a matter of seconds, and happens like this to people every day.  It’s likely happening to someone nearby right now.

Sometimes the shortest split second in time changes the direction of our lives.  A seemingly innocuous decision rattles our whole world like a meteorite striking Earth.  Entire lives have been swiveled and flipped upside down, for better or worse, on the strength of an unpredictable event.  And these events are always happening to someone else right this second.

However good or bad a situation is now, it will change.  That’s the one thing you can count on.  So when life is good, enjoy it.  Don’t go looking for something better every second.  This very moment can be the perfect teacher. Happiness never comes to those who don’t appreciate what they have while they have it.
