4 ‘Traditional Marriage’ Politicians Who Had Affairs

Have you heard the latest about the governor of Alabama? The state’s homophobic leader has been forced to resign after being caught cheating on his wife with a staffer.

Ha!

While I don’t like to make a habit of calling out people’s personal lives, I’m happy to make some exceptions for politicians who have made it a point to try to impede the personal lives of fellow Americans. Let’s give no sympathy to legislators who have blocked gay rights under the guise of “protecting the sanctity of marriage” while simultaneously making a mockery of their own marriages by committing adultery.

Here are four conservative politicians who, in recent years, have proven that hypocrisy is thriving among “family values” candidates:

1. Robert Bentley

Let’s start by giving more details about the man of the hour, (now former) Governor Bentley. While in office he referred to same-sex marriage as a “social experiment” that was unfair to children. He instead championed the importance of traditional marriage.

Alas, Bentley’s marriage wasn’t traditional in his handling of his own marriage. He has now admitted that he not only had an affair with his staffer, but that he broke ethics laws in an attempt to cover up his extramarital activity.

Initially, Bentley refused to resign for his dalliances, but when it was clear that impeachment proceedings would move forward despite the GOP’s control of the Alabama legislative bodies, he changed his mind. As part of a plea deal, he has agreed to never seek public office again.

2. Scott DesJarlais

U.S. Rep. DesJarlais of Tennessee is aggressive in his views against same-sex marriage. In fact, he’s in favor of passing a constitutional amendment that would ban gay people from wedding. He also sponsored the State Marriage Defense Act, which would allow states to have priority in defining what a marriage is over the federal government.

However, for a guy who cares a lot about the supposed sanctity of marriage, DesJarlais has sure done a lot to jeopardize his own marriage. He was exposed to have had multiple extramarital affairs, and recordings of phone conversations in which he pressured women he impregnated to have abortions surfaced, too.

In case, you’re wondering, yes, he’s a hypocrite on the subject of abortion, as well, spending his political career being loudly anti-choice.

Somehow, DesJarlais has been reelected to Congress three times after this scandalous news broke. It probably helps that, by DesJarlais’s own proclamation, “God has forgiven [him].” He’s used the theme of God’s redemption in subsequent campaigns.

3. Mark Souder

Congressman Souder represented the state of Indiana in the House for eight terms. During that time, he appealed to his conservative base by declaring, “Studies consistently demonstrate that it is best for a child to have a mother and father, and I am committed to preserving traditional marriage, the union of one man and one woman.”

It turns out, though, that Souder had his own troubles with the “one woman” part. When rumors began flying that he was having an affair with his staffer, he initially insisted the reason he suddenly disappeared from D.C. was to tend to his sick wife. However, the jig was up, and Souder resigned, apologizing for sinning against God and his family.

Hilariously, Souder and his mistress had previously recorded a video together in which they promoted the concept of abstinence to constituents. While it’s true Souder was having sex after he was married, at least some of that sex wasn’t with his wife.

4. Joey Hensley

You may not know Hensley by name, but you’re probably familiar with this Tennessee state senator’s outrageous handiwork. Five years ago, he sponsored the state’s infamous “Don’t Say Gay” bill that requires teachers to recommend that parents seek mental health counseling if they suspect a student of being LGBTQ.

After that failed, Hensley didn’t abandon his homophobia, instead pushing to repeal a law that would strip automatic parental rights to the married lesbian partner of a woman impregnated via artificial insemination. There’s nothing more family values than legally delegitimizing members of a family unit.

As for Hensley’s personal life, oh boy, have we saved the most outrageous story for last. Hensley, a doctor, had an affair with his married nurse – who he also prescribed pain pills to. (It’s against medical codes of ethics for doctors to have a romantic relationship with their patients.) Did we mention that the nurse in question is also Hensley’s second cousin?

Hensley swears the physical aspect of their affair started after he was divorced from his fourth wife (yes, that’s right, he’s been married four times.) Either way, one of Hensley’s ex-wives has a restraining order against him because he allegedly hit her with his car on two occasions.

But, you know, it’s definitely gay couples that want to have children that are ruining the American family unit!
