5 Ways Trump Could Be Impeached

Weíre just over 100 days into Donald Trumpís administration, and a large portion of the United States is begging for the president to get kicked out of office. For some, a potential impeachment seems like wishful thinking, but looking at the actions of Trump, he has behaved irresponsibly enough for Congress to legitimately draw impeachment proceedings against him.

Below are five justifications for which Trump could realistically be removed from office. If you agree that itís time for Trump to go for these and so many other reasons, be sure to sign this popular†Care2 petition: Impeach Trump.

1. Trumpís Extensive Unresolved Business Ties

Some suspected that Trump would be in violation of the Constitution from the moment he took office due to his lack of distance from his businesses. Rather than addressing those issues, Trump continued to shroud his business interests by refusing to show his taxes, maintaining some of his holdings, and shuffling some assets to family members in what he called (but was definitely not actually) a ďblind trust.Ē

Trump has so many financial holdings that constitute a conflict of interest that it would take forever to list them – so check them out over at The Atlantic instead. In the past, presidents have made sure to fully divest in accordance to the law to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest, but Trumpís stance has been that the laws donít apply to him.

Itís actually Trumpís foreign business ties that leave him most suspectible for impeachment. The Constitution has a foreign-emoluments clause that forbids elected officials like the president from accepting money, gifts, etc. from foreign powers. By not distancing himself from his foreign business interests, Trump is automatically at odds with this clause when he profits off foreign relations while simultaneously being in charge of our diplomatic relations with the same countries.

2. Lying About Obama Wiretapping Him

Remember when Trump wildly accused the former president of illegally wiretapping him? Politicos seemed to automatically disregard it as a lie despite it being a serious allegation that deserved to be investigated thoroughly.

Soon enough, even FBI director James Comey went on record as saying that Obama did not order a wiretap on Trump, seeming to put Trumpís accusation to bed. The other day, Trump famously told a reporter, ďI donít stand by anythingĒ when asked whether he stood by his wiretapping claim.

The appearance†that Trump used his position as president to knowingly make a false criminal and conspiratorial accusation against the former president seems to enter the territory of misleading the American public,†which is a potentially impeachable offense.

3. Pushing an Unconstitutional Muslim Travel Ban

The First Amendment couldnít be clearer that laws cannot be made that prohibit the free exercise of religion, and Trumpís executive order to prevent people from predominately Muslim countries from entering the country did just that.

Although Trumpís team argued that it was about blocking possible terrorists rather than religion, the ban oddly left out many of the countries that have actually perpetrated terrorist attacks on America. Plus, Trump said during his campaign he was going to completely ban Muslims from entering the country, which made it hard to conceal his intentions later.

The fact that Trump then made another (unsuccessful) attempt at advancing a revised but similar executive order just goes to show that he lacks respect for the Constitution. That disrespect was, of course, amplified by Trump slamming the judicial branch, as if the multiple judges were somehow out of line for doing their duty to uphold the Constitution.

4. Ties to Russia

The evidence is mounting that people associated with the Trump campaign colluded with Russian entities to hack political emails in an attempt to sway the election. However, the question at this point is how much Trump knew about these nefarious plans, and whether there is evidence Ė or potential testimony Ė that would corroborate that he was in on the plans.

If a connection can be established to Trump Ė and it seems like thereís certainly enough smoking guns for Congress to be trying to hunt for such a connection Ė that would constitute treason, which is absolutely an impeachable offense. With a Republican majority in Congress, though, the incentive isnít necessarily there to connect the dots, which is why an investigation by an independent body would probably be necessary for this to come to fruition.

5. Mental Unfitness

It turns out that Congress could remove a president from office without bothering to go forward with impeachment procedures in the first place. Article 4 of the 25th Amendment specifically carves out a provision where Congress or the vice president and the majority of his cabinet can oust the president if he is ďunable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.Ē

This provision was created when politicians worried what would happen if a president, for example, fell into a coma, leaving him unable to resign and give the job to the vice president. However, the creators decided to intentionally leave the wording vague enough to give Congress and the executive branch some wiggle room in determining what kind of condition the president would need to be in to get removed.

Plenty of people have questioned whether the president is mentally fit for office. Certainly, his erratic behavior and proclivity for creating enemies from his unnecessary insults is not good for this countryís diplomatic relations. Though itís a long shot it would ever occur, at a certain point, itís possible that the rest of Washington would come together to say that the White House needs a more competent leader than Trump.

For the sake of upholding the Constitution and keeping democracy intact, letís call on Congress to impeach Trump. Sign the petition to make it clear youíd like to see Trump out of office as soon as possible.
