69,000 Care2 Members Urge U.K. to Accept Refugees

Thousands of refugees are currently stranded across Europe, and the U.K. is in a position to help. Unfortunately, the country’s government is dragging its feet on committing to help those in need of safety.

The Hummingbird Project has launched a petition to help, which currently boasts more than 69,000 signatures. Elaine Ortiz of The Hummingbird Project spoke to Care2 about their work.

“I’ve literally been inundated with hundreds and hundreds of emails [of support],” she said. “A lot of people have been disgusted by the way the U.K. government has been treating refugees.”

Ortiz wants to see the U.K. accepts tens of thousands of refugees and believes the current allocation of resources currently used to keep folks from entering the country could be shifted to welcome those in need. “That money could really be invested in making some people’s lives a little more comfortable and being more humane,” she explained.

Media and public pressure is already shifting the landscape in the U.K. around accepting refugees. Prime Minister David Cameron announced that “thousands” of Syrian refugees would be accepted after a photograph of a drowned Syrian three-year-old went viral following his body washing on-shore in Turkey.

Ortiz says citizens have “jumped at the chance to help” after learning more about the growing needs of refugees currently seeking shelter. “We’re quite open to having refugees and we feel quite strongly about taking refugees,” she added.

Legal matters around accepting a proposal from the European Commission asking the U.K. to accept at least 2,309 vulnerable refugees are a complicated. There’s a technical cut-off for the opt-in decision that’s passed, Parliament only returns from recess on September 7.

Many citizens would like to see the proposal democratically debated in Parliament and hope to see the U.K. at least agree to such a mild proposal.

Ortiz elaborated that the number of refugees recommended to be taken in by the U.K. is “a small amount of people compared to the amount of people who’ve been displaced.” She expressed displeasure at the way the Tories (popular nomer of the Conservative Party members) have handled the situation.

“I think the Tories who are in are just not very open to anything to do with the refugee crisis. I think they have a feeling that they don’t want to encourage people to come to our country,” she said, before adding that to call the situation a “crisis” for the U.K. was hyperbolic.

Public action is incredibly important to let the ruling party know that citizens support the plight of refugees and want to welcome them into the country.

The Hummingbird Project is named for the story of a small bird who tried to assist in putting out a large forest fire and responded to criticism of his effort by explaining that he was doing the best he could. We can and should do the same for the thousands of displaced people in need of shelter.

A disturbing number of these refugees are aggressive military-aged men. Where are the women, children, and old people who usually make up groups of refugees? And many of these men have been very aggressive, yelling "Allahu Akbar!" and destroying food and other aid if it doesn't meet their standards.
