80 Dogs Who Were Rescued From a Dog Meat Farm Are About to Start New Lives

Animal advocates have been working tirelessly to raise awareness about the dog meat trade in South Korea and shut it down for good. Now, thanks to rescuers, another farm is permanently closing and more than 80 lucky dogs are safe from this brutal industry and on their way to new lives.

This rescue is currently being carried out by a team from Humane Society International (HSI) at a dog meat farm in Siheung-si, South Korea.

Heartbreaking images and footage released by HSI show the conditions that dogs from a wide range of breeds and ages were forced to endure, confined to small, barren and overcrowded cages, or left on short chains.

They would have existed that way until they were slaughtered, but now their lives have been forever changed.

This fortunate group of dogs will now be free from the cages and chains that confined them, and will get to experience entirely different lives as members of a family.

The first 18 are scheduled to arrive at thePearson International Airport in Canada on Tuesday and will be taken to an emergency shelter run by HSI Canada, where they’ll spend the next few weeks adjusting and getting the medical and behavioral care and attention they need.

The rest will soon follow, and will be headed to HSUS Emergency Placement Partner (EPP) shelters, where they’ll be prepared for adoption.

HSI has been working in partnership with those in the industry who express interest in getting out to help them close their farms and transition into other lines of work. According to HSI, closing these farms is part of a broader strategy to show the South Korean government a positive model for state-sponsored closure of thousands of farms still in existence across the nation.

So far, this effort marks the eleventh farm HSI has successfully helped close down over the past three years. They have helped saved 1,200 dogs who were moved to safety in Canada, the U.S. and UK. Over the coming months, the cages from this farm will be demolished and mushrooms will be grown in their place.

While millions of dogs are still at risk, and there is still a lot of work to be done to shut this industry down once and for all, attitudes among the public are changing for the better, particularly among younger generations who are eschewing dog meat.

Take Action!

You can help by signing and sharing HSI’s Care2 petition urging the government of South Korea to recognize dogs and cats as companions under the law, and ban their slaughter for human consumption once and for all.

I'm happy for those dogs!! No animal deserves this life!! But what about the cats who endure the same fate?! They also need to be rescued and protected too!!!!

Just kill the South Korean dog "meat farmers". Send in the military and gun the bastards down. The government of South Korea are terrorists for allowing these atrocities.

I'm glad that these dogs could be saved and hope they all go to happy homes. But I am afraid that they are in the minority. Still, we must keep trying.

I did not sign the petition. I am tired of seeing all the concern and protection for dogs when cats are treated the same way. there are organizations who agree with me that when the dog meat trade is finally stopped, the misery the cats endure will multiply. all they will have left is the cats and it will be brutal.

So glad there are people in this world helping these dogs. Blessings to all humans who help our animals.
