All Your Questions About the Big Michael Flynn Revelation Answered

After a string of incriminating but minor revelations coming out about the Trump campaign’s alleged collusion with Russian, on Friday morning we finally learned a piece of news that could legitimately topple the president in due course: Michael Flynn was instructed by Donald Trump himself to contact Russian officials.

What Did Flynn Confess?

The most immediate, non-speculative news is that Flynn, Trump’s former national security advisor, has pled guilty to knowingly lying to the FBI.

Previously, Flynn told the FBI that he had not discussed U.S. sanctions with Russian spy/ambassador Sergey Kislyak on the same day the Obama administration implemented them. He now admits that that discussion did occur, and that Kislyak acknowledged Flynn’s communication had inspired Russia to temper its reactions to the sanctions.

Is Flynn Cooperating with Mueller?

Politicos have wondered whether or not Special Counsel Robert Mueller was preparing to turn Flynn into a valuable informant, and now the answer is clear. On Friday, Flynn said, “My guilty plea and agreement to cooperate with the Special Counsel’s Office reflect a decision I made in the best interests of my family and of our country.”

Did Mueller Cut Flynn a Deal?

In admitting guilt, Flynn had to assert that he was neither coerced into making this plea nor promised a specific sentence for cooperating with Mueller. That doesn’t, however, rule out that he may be shown leniency for aiding the Special Counsel.

Lying to the FBI carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. The prison part is especially ironic for a man who once led a crowd in a chant of “lock her up” (in reference to Hillary Clinton), saying, “If I did a tenth of what she did, I would be in jail today.” Flynn later indicated that he “almost immediately wished that he had handled [the speech] differently.” (Well, duh.)

What Else Does Flynn Know?

Flynn did not contact Kislyak on his own accord. Rather, Jared Kushner instructed Flynn to make the call, demonstrating that the collusion with Russia seems to go right to the top of the administration.

In addition to implicating that other senior official, Flynn is reportedly willing to testify under oath that Trump himself directed him to make contact with the Russians prior to Trump becoming the president.

So Is Trump Nailed on Collusion Charges Now?

That’d be super premature to say given that we don’t know at this point whether or not the message Trump asked Flynn to convey to Russia was anything illegal or inappropriate.

But You Said That This News Could Topple the President?

Indeed, this is looking terrible for the president, particularly as it pertains to obstruction of justice charges. Remember that this entire investigation was set into motion when Trump tried to pressure then FBI Director James Comey to drop any scrutiny of Flynn, and subsequently fired him for not agreeing. It’s looking increasingly likely that Trump knew there was something to cover up.

Trump hasn’t learned his lesson on obstructing justice, either. The New York Times now has it on good authority that Trump spent recent months urging several conservative members of the Senate – particularly those in charge of the Senate Intelligence Committee – to put an end to the investigation on Russian collusion. Could it be that he realizes a finished investigation will result in his arrest/ouster?

How Has the White House Responded to Flynn’s Plea?

For starters, the administration cancelled a previously scheduled press event with the president, presumably not wanting Trump to face questions about Flynn. Reporters shouted some questions at him anyway, but Trump ignored them.

More interestingly, the White House took quick steps to distance itself from Flynn by depicting him as someone who worked for the Obama administration and only served as Trump’s national security advisor for less than a month.

That portrayal completely distorts reality, though. Obama had fired Flynn and even advised Trump against hiring him. Instead, Trump used him as a campaign surrogate and made him a high-ranking official – only getting rid of him when it was no longer politically tenable to keep him in the White House. Even upon Flynn’s dismissal, Trump described him in glowing terms.

What Now?

Well, there’s no doubt that Mueller is making some major progress in his investigation. We can only speculate if this news will ultimately cause the entire Trump administration to crumble, but the odds of that happening are certainly a lot greater than they were prior to Flynn’s cooperation.

Regus So Hillary using her personal fortune after Obama left the DNC 13 million in debt is ok? I thought political parties were supposed to be free of influence. Why did Hillary not take Bernie Sanders offer and not take money from super pacs or corporations? Hillary took control of the DNC months before she ran, and rigged the system in her favor. If that's not corruption, what is? BTW, saying she was allowed to have a private server is a lie, as was her statement that she never sent classified emails. Also deleting 30,000 emails to hide information is a crime.

Regus No one is defending this fraud Trump and the Republicans, but your dishonest rant and false diatribe cannot stand. Hillary lied by saying she was allowed to have a personal server and that she sent no classified emails. Hillary also deleted 30,000 emails, which is against the law. In addition disgraced liar Donna Brazille who passed debate questions to Hillary, admitted that Hillary used her enormous wealth to run the DNC, that favored her from the start and cheated Bernie Sanders out of his primary. The WikiLeaks emails also proved Hillary was too close to Wall Street for the 21 million dollars they gave her, and Hillary refused to release the transcripts for the speeches to Goldman Sachs. Anyone who would defend Hillary, who supported the Iraq war, worldwide natural gas fracking, the TPP 45 times, the Patriot Act, refused to support Medicare for All, refused to denounce the Dakota Access pipeline because she profited off it, and supported Monsanto, is a sick person. Please get some psychiatric help, and take your meds.
