Care2 Success! Fourth Animal Race Canceled in UK in 2017

Care2 member Samantha Francis was outraged when she discovered that her local church in Woodditton was planning to include a sheep race in their annual fete, where 50 sheep — animals who are nervous and easily scared — would be forced to race with a stuffed animal on their back, while the crowd cheered.

She†created a Care2 petition†asking the authorities to cancel this unnecessarily cruel event.

The petition soon garnered over 60,000 signatures and within days, the Woodditton Parish Council decided to cancel the sheep race.†

Francis was so thrilled with the success of her petition that she started another one†to stop the sheep race through the streets of Moffat, Scotland on August 13.†

Once again, these timid animals would be forced to race with teddy bears strapped to their backs.

Over 83,000 Care2 animal lovers signed Francisís second petition and once again she was successful when Moffat Community Council decided to cancel their sheep race.

Fired up by her successes, Francis then turned her attention to a pig racing event at The Vine in Great Bardfield, Essex, and created a Care2 petition pointing out that this is animal abuse, and we should not be using pigs for entertainment.

Yet another victory happened when Francis learned that The Vine had taken note of her petition and decided to cancel the pig racing event on August 27.

A Fourth Animal Race Canceled!

Care2 member Sharon-Ann was so inspired by the success of these three Care2 petitions in canceling animal races that she decided to create her own petition.

This Care2†petition targeted a sheep race scheduled for the Bellingham Country Show in Northumberland on August 28, where the animals would be forced to race against each other for the amusement of festival goers.†

ďThis is cruel and unnecessary humiliation,” she wrote. “[L]arge noisy crowds will be cheering and shouting at them and this will be extremely frightening and stressful for them.Ē

After almost 42,000 Care2 activists signed up to support Sharon-Ann, the Bellingham Show Committee decided not to include the sheep race in their show.

“Great news!” she wrote in a petition update. “I told the show committee about the petition on Monday and they emailed me directly to advise they had a meeting and decided to not include the sheep race in the show. This is the third sheep race to be cancelled as a result of a Care2 petition! Well done everybody!”

Congratulations to Sharon-Ann, Samantha Francis and to all the Care2 members who signed their petitions.

We Can Win!

Letís keep up the pressure: take action today by signing this Care2 petition demanding the cancelation of the sheep race at Llandovery Sheep Festival in Wales on September 23 and 24.

Inspired by these successes? Why not start your own Care2 petition? Youíll find itís easy to get started using these guidelines and soon the Care2 community will be signing up to support you.
