Children of Famous Anti-Gay Extremists Speak Out

Rosie O’Donell spoke on March 9 to two gay men who are the offspring of famously anti-gay families.

One of them was Randy Roberts Potts, the grandson of the late controversial televangelist Oral Roberts. He talked with O’Donell about his upbringing in the Roberts family compound.

Potts talks about how his parents’ prejudice affects his own children, mentioning overhearing them telling their friends that their “grandparents don’t love them.”

He explains that they were raised to believe that gay people are almost demonic. His uncle committed suicide because he was gay, and he tells O’Donell about how he confronted his mother about how preaching against a group of people does real damage:

“This is why your brother killed himself. This is why your two sons aren’t close to you… There are kids out there… Your message is killing them,” he said he told her.

Potts is touring the Bible Belt as part of a “Gay Agenda” tour, the aim of which is illuminating the normality of the lives of gay couples. He is marrying his partner, Keaton, in May.

I do find it interesting how many "christians" today are actually following the laws and precepts of judaism as opposed to christianity. I love hearing a christian say "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" never knowing that that is NOT what their christ-guy had to say. They seem to forget or are just ignorant of the fact that their jesus-guy was sent to earth to tell people that their god wants to make a few changes, hence the creation of the new testament. The old testament god was a real bad-ass who had no problems killing any human who did not pray to him exclusively. He was NOT a loving, kindly god.

What a strong way to deal with family! A really great human being that was able to survive such an abuse and come out a whole person. Thanks Mr. Potts!

Beverly J, I too wonder about translations. Sometimes a word can have several meaning; who’s to say which one the author meant?
How many times have we read stories on Care2 (or other sites) and totally misinterpreted what the author meant? If we can do it on the internet, it’s surely been done in religious texts.
And I always wondered about David & Jonathan. David said he loved Jonathan more than any woman, and "the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul." Read 1 Samuel.

So sad. where is our compassion for those who aren't our breed of "normal". The world will one day be more tolerant (we can dream right?)

maybe they should do some investigating into what some of these ancient people really ment when they wrote. For example in anceint hebrew the word "salvation" means freedom and liberation from bondage. Its also political meaning freedom from oppressive rulers, and personal, freedom and liberation from our own fears and demons, such as the need to be greater and more pure tan others....Not "going to heaven after we die." Thats the contemporary christian interpretation.

Rightiousness is another biblical word meaning justice. Fair distribution of wealth, The way the world should be, not the way things are. Egalitarian society........Not a holier than thou, condematory, hypocritical, moralistic, full of themselves, pompus and arrogant....

Abomination, it just means not normative according to the cuture.

If you knew ANYTHING and clearly you do would know that homosexuality was NOT cast out of the church until 150 years ago!!!! No where in the Hebrew translations of the bible is there a word meaning "homosexual". Not to mention there were passages in the original translation that frightened those converting it to what we NOW know as "HIS holy word" so what did they do..what anyone does who is frightened of the unknown..THEY CHANGED IT! Your hypocritical views make me sick! All organized religion does is control, manipulate and brain wash! All those following it (like yourself) judge everyone including those in your church, yet they make excuses and justify themselves!!!!! If God didn't love the LGBT community how come there are not ONE but FOUR counts of homosexual stories in the bible (written where people like you wouldn't be able to identify with them until AFTER it was published)- Philip and the Lord, David and Johnathan, Naomi and Ruth and lastly..Daniel and Ashpenaz! You claim that being gay is not of God and is an abomination..if that's the case why are these stories in YOUR BOOK?!?! If that's true, why did GOD create animal species that are GAY?!?! You say he creates all living creatures right? Apparently that excludes the LGBT community does that also negate penguins, dolphins, bison, swans, giraffes..and a WHOLE laundry list of others?!?! I have been dealing with people like you my whole life...your close minded views and inability to look past

This is a really, really sad photo!! Why would anyone teach anyone to hate? - Especially using the name of God to perpetuate fear and hate mongering? Look at the first two commandments - love God and love thy neighbour. None of the rest of the commandments tell anyone to hate or to judge. Please just follow the Golden Rule and stop judging everyone except yourself!

So, Jesus loves the little children but the nasty old grandparents don't. Oh the hypocrisy!
