Climate Change No Longer a Security Threat – Or So Says Trump

Are you worried about the threat climate change poses to our country? President Donald Trump sure isn’t sweating it. Following a year marked by flooding, wildfires and hurricanes, Trump formally eliminated climate change as a threat to national security. (By which I mean he took it off a list of threats; he has done nothing to alleviate climate change since taking office.)

There, feel safer?

Trump’s announcement came as part of a congressionally mandated National Security Strategy that the president must outline. Trump spent much of his speech insulting the national security efforts of previous presidents.

According to Trump, his primary strategies for dealing with national security are to keep undesirable people out of the country (he reiterated the need for a border wall) and asserting America’s independence – the latter point being a stark contrast from Barack Obama’s policy of building allies as a form of security.

Speaking of Obama, back in 2015, the then president decided to elevate climate change to a national security concern based on the growing wealth of information on the subject. That included a major report by the Department of Defense worrying about the long-term security implications of climate change for the United States.

In that report, the DoD said that global warming will exacerbate issues of poverty and reduce natural resources. As people find food and water scarcer and scarcer, it creates political instability which in turn breeds more conflict – both in terms of war and terrorism.

For the record, this decision to ditch climate change is also in conflict with the view of Trump’s own current defense secretary, James Mattis, who we have to assume knows a thing or two about national security. At his confirmation hearing, Mattis asserted that he both believed climate change is real and that it poses a significant threat to national security.

In one small way, it may be a relief that Trump doesn’t consider climate change a national security threat. Given that he’s pulled out of the Paris climate change agreement, threw his support behind dirty energy sources and rendered the EPA useless, he’d be making all the wrong moves to protect us from it.

Still, that’s little comfort given that scientists and most Americans realize that it is a threat. Whether or not you want to call it a matter of national security, the scientific evidence is overwhelming that the warming of planet will cost many human lives.

Trump’s skewed perception of reality is a danger to the country. For a man who is fixated on every incident of violence perpetuated by an immigrant or person of color, Trump sure seems to have no concern about one of the most pressing threats that is liable to have a body count exponentially higher than any terrorist attack.

It’s disingenuous for Trump to pretend that he and he alone cares about national security while disregarding climate change entirely. His “strategy” is fueled by racism, not a drive to protect the people of this nation.
