Everyone Breaks Campaign Finance Laws, Republicans Insist

Most of Robert Mueller’s findings are still unknown to the public, but last week’s filings on Michael Cohen make it pretty obvious that the special counsel has incriminating evidence on Trump directing his lawyer/fixer to violate campaign finance laws.

Right on cue, prominent Republicans have flooded the press with all sorts of reasons that breaking campaign finance laws wasn’t actually a problem. Every damn time they have the opportunity to hold the commander-in-chief accountable in the slightest, they defer in favor of making comments that would give ethical people a hernia.

For example, soon-to-be House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy dismissed the seriousness of Trump’s illicit activities, arguing that if campaign finance violations were an “impeachable offense… there’s a lot of members in Congress who would have to leave for that.”

Oh, really? Unlike the still ongoing Hillary Clinton investigations McCarthy has spurred on, that seems like something we should be looking into! Our campaign finance laws are embarrassingly weak, holding politicians to a minimum standard of transparency and accountability. The fact that an apparent lot of members of Congress can’t even follow those rules points to shady behavior.

We already know of one prime example – U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, a Republican representing a red district in California, who was indicted by a grand jury over the summer. Next year, he faces 60 federal charges for using campaign funds as his personal piggybank. He was somehow re-elected anyway.

Another common retort amongst conservative pundits is that Barack Obama broke campaign finance rules, too, but they rarely explain what that rule-break is. An audit of Obama’s $778 million 2008 presidential campaign found that he was a little late in filing FEC reports on about $2 million in smaller (~$1,500) donations, for which there were 48-hour deadlines.

But look, it’s not as if the campaign tried to conceal these donations or didn’t report them at all – they just missed some deadlines in the hectic-ness of the last weeks of the campaign and then had to pay a fine of $375,000 for the mistake. To in any way equate what Trump has done the Obama accounting slips is just silly though. As Wonkette explains, “money laundering, illegal campaign finance donations, falsifying business records and filing false tax forms are crimes, and submitting your paperwork late is a civil infraction.”

Oh, and then there’s Republican Orrin Hatch, the Senate’s most senior member. When asked about the growing allegations against Trump, Hatch responded, “I don’t care, all I can say is he’s doing a good job as president.” The message is clear: Hatch doesn’t give a crap what Trump does wrong so long as he’s a conservative. If you want Hatch to be upset about campaign finance laws, find a Democrat who’s guilty of it!

Partisanship takes precedent. Republicans have demonstrated they’re willing to ignore election laws and rules to win because maintaining power is all that matters. For all we know, the secret payments made to influence an election outcome are just one of the things that Mueller has uncovered, but best believe Republicans are going to offer excuses every step of the way.

Rhoberta E Opensecrets.org shows that our healthcare industry has paid Nancy Pelosi a large some of money, and Nancy Pelosi refuses to support Medicare for all, which we desperately need in this country. So Nancy Pelosi is taking money in the form of a bribe. Millions die each year because they can't afford healthcare, so it really is disengenous of you to defend Nancy Pelosi. BTW Nancy Pelosi is worth 100 million dollars.

Get over yourself and realize all you THINK about people may not be true. She was rich BEFORE going into politics years ago. Did she make mistakes? Probably, just like even YOU probably do.
Your go to open secrets has you and paul brainwashed. I personally think you're jealous of ANYONE making money. What's YOUR annual income brian?
I'm quite sure in the new year health care WILL be addressed and then what will you whine about? At her age I wonder if YOU could keep up to her. trump is in for a rough ride if he's still there.
BTW, I'm also QUITE sure Ms. Pelosi and her HUSBAND and children are worth more than 1M. When you bury your profile no one knows anything about you except how annoying your repeated cut and paste is.. You didn't address your wish for marijuana or the environment or the FACT that so many DID get initial health care to establish baseline values. REALLY sour grapes.

Rhoberta E It's not what I want Nancy Pelosi to do, it's what most voters who support Medicare for all, want. Secondly Pelosi being worth 1 million dollars, when most Americans make $30,000 a year, and live in poverty does not look good. Finally opensecret. org shows Nancy Pelosi took a large sum of money from our criminal healthcare industry. So Nancy Pelosi has taken money in the form of a bribe, and should be punished.

BTW, Ms. Pelosi's HUSBAND who attended Harvard, Georgetown, etc. IS the businessman who originally funded Ms Pelosi's career. If as a couple they do well financially, why the sour grapes ?

Here's your line-up
Ms Pelosi has too much money and, according to YOU, won't do what you say she should
President Obama took money from someone YOU thought he shouldn't
Whine about the ACA that allowed so many to actually GET baseline health care instead or burdening Emergency (for profit) hospitals (and the republicans decimated that plan wanting their personal profits to soar with private insurance)
You apparently really want / need marijuana because you mention it almost every post.
The environment is being ruined in NA daily but you whine about only one thing. GAS fracking.
Wars and invasions that happened years ago and while perhaps wrong you can't change the past only move FORWARD.
A current POTUS who is being investigated and now it is into every aspect of his crooked, slimy life. But you'll blame others for not electing your go to person who wouldn't support what YOU are STILL whining about.
Have I missed anything in your cut and paste post that most members have seen 1000 plus times?
I almost forgot, yet another Russian pleaded guilty for trying to influence US republicans through the NRA connection IN the US. But she did have her picture taken with prominent GOP men AND met Donnie Jr. Hmmm.
trump IS a crook, his family seem to be less than honest and aging Senators give him a pass.

Debbi, I never heard that Hatch has dementia, but I googled it after reading your post. I found something written by a man who knew Hatch long ago but saw him again recently and noticed how much he had deteriorated. Hatch was confused and had to ask an aide what to say to answer someone's question.

The Democrats have horrible leaders like Nancy Pelosi who is worth 100 million dollars, and refuses to support Medicare for all because she is bought and paid for by our criminal healthcare industry. No wonder this crook Trump won. After 8 years of Obama's failed neo liberal policies, selling out to Wall Street by taking $400,000 as a reward for not prosecuting one banker, and giving us a horrible Republican healthcare plan instead of Medicare for all, most people couldn't vote for Hillary who took 22 million dollars from Wall Street, refused to support Medicare for all, marijuana legalization, and supported worldwide natural gas fracking, Monsanto, and the Iraq and Libyan wars. It's time for the Democrats to stop blaming Russia, and blame themselves for causing this crook Trump to win.
