From Well-Known Human Rights Activist To Minister’s Wife

Nazanin Afshin-Jam is an Iranian born singer, actress and an outspoken human rights activist. She speaks out against the Iranian regime and pushes for Canada to take action.

Already in July, she made headlines calling out TD Canada Trust bank for closing the accounts of several Iranian-Canadians without any explanation. Unfortunately, the headlines screamed “Peter MacKay’s wife.”

Afshin-Jam married Canada’s Defense Minister last summer. When she first married MacKay, headlines called her a beauty queen focusing on her looks rather than her more intellectual pursuits.

Another woman reduced to her marital status despite her long list of qualifications.

Now Afshin-Jam has told the Charlottetown Guardian that Canada needs to bring Omar Khadr home. Khadr is a Canadian citizen, she says and “Omar Khadr was a child when he was involved in combat under the UN definition and so we should abide by the international laws and rules that we expect of other countries as well.”

It will be interesting to see whether MacKay gets any reaction about these comments, given that the Public Safety Minister, Vic Toews, declared his view that Khadr’s return would create a risk to public safety. (Meanwhile, the Harper government has assured American officials that Khadr’s transfer would happen in a timely manner).

With Peter MacKay already behind some embarrassments to the Prime Minister, will his new bride’s unwillingness to quiet down and tow the party line cause more friction and finally get him kicked out of Cabinet?

"Perhaps her activities, her intellect and her commitment to human rights will act to keep Mr. MacKay in office, wouldn't that be nice?" - Julia W. -

Julia, it would definitely NOT be nice. Peter MacKay is one of the most UNTRUSTWORTHY politicians ever to sit in Canada's House of Commons. He has broken his sworn word numerous times, violated agreements, used government resources for his own personal wishes (ie. a search & rescue helicopter to pick him up from a PERSONAL FISHING TRIP just to save a little time, and he openly called his former girlfriend (former MP Belinda Stronach) a dog. In his international dealings, he was very chummy with Condoleezza Rice - so much so that it was a source of cynical amusement here in Canada.

We really do NOT want him to be re-elected. Canada has a lot of crooked politicians running this country right now, and Peter MacKay is one of the crookedest.

Interesting article about a brave and earnest woman. Ms. Boughner has my thanks, but I would like to draw her attention to one phrase that she used regarding the new bride's unwillingness to ... "tow the party line." She evidently failed to pull the line along behind her. Or perhaps she failed to "toe the party line," something else altogether. (Just tryna be helpful.)

I'm glad MacKay apparently doesn't try to make his wife be a different person that herself for the sake of his political career

"Peter MacKay's wife..." also known as Mrs. Peter MacKay... in other words, a woman who has no identity other than as Mrs. Husband's Name. That was the style when I was growing up; sad to see it is still happening, along with referring to her beauty rather than her interests and accomplishments.
