Global Leaders Troll President Trump Over Veterans Day No-Show

Veterans Day is a solemn affair — and perhaps none more dignified than November 11, 2018, the 100-year anniversary of the end of World War I in Europe. Unfortunately, our own president missed many of the historic activities due to what appeared to be a rainy forecast and a general bad temper.

And world leaders weren’t about to let that go unnoticed.

President Donald Trump didn’t make it to an official cemetery ceremony in France meant to honor the American soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the First World War. The official White House excuse was poor visibility that would make it too difficult for his helicopter to land.

When asked why he didn’t take a car like so many others in his party did, President Trump claimed on Twitter that the Secret Service forbade him from making the trip:

By the way, when the helicopter couldn’t fly to the first cemetery in France because of almost zero visibility, I suggested driving. Secret Service said NO, too far from airport & big Paris shutdown. Speech next day at American Cemetery in pouring rain! Little reported-Fake News!

The sulker-in-chief may have felt justified in defending his no-show — or at least placing the blame on someone else. But other world leaders, those less bothered by a little rain and a long car ride, made sure to criticize President Trump over his lack of public appearances.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau went umbrella-less in the downpour, saying it was the least he could do considering the sacrifices made by soldiers a century earlier.

The Express reports:

Mr Trudeau shunned an umbrella and let the pouring rain soak him as he delivered a speech to veterans and families of war victims. He said: “As we sit here in the rain, thinking how uncomfortable we must be these minutes as our suits get wet and our hair gets wet and our shoes get wet, I think it’s all the more fitting that we remember on that day, in Dieppe, the rain wasn’t rain — it was bullets.”

England’s Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron joined together on Saturday to pay tribute to veterans. Macron went on to join other foreign leaders in a “peace forum” held on the actual anniversary of Armistice Day — one President Trump did not attend. However, President Trump was there in spirit, as Macron warned about the dangers of confusing “nationalism” with “patriotism” – a clear reference the president’s recent declarations that he is a “nationalist.”

Macron was joined by France’s army, which trolled Trump on Twitter. “There is rain, but it does not matter,” they posted on Monday, alongside a photo of a rain-soaked recruit crawling through an obstacle. “We remain motivated.”

Goading President Trump wasn’t just a French hobby, either. Nicholas Soames — grandson of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who served as the highest ranking elected official in Great Britain during World War I — was also unimpressed by President Trump’s no-show.

According to Slate:

One of those who spoke up was a grandson of Winston Churchill. “They died with their face to the foe and that pathetic inadequate @realDonaldTrump couldn’t even defy the weather to pay his respects to The Fallen,” Nicholas Soames, a conservative member of the British Parliament, tweeted.

Of course, many world leaders have no problem standing in the rain to honor fallen soldiers. The Nordic Business Insider ran a gallery of famous global figures braving the elements throughout history. And progressive Twitter, never one to leave a President Trump flub unnoticed, barraged the former reality television star with photo after photo of his arch nemesis and predecessor President Barack Obama paying homage to the troops in all sorts of inclement weather.

No wonder President Trump has hardly been seen in public since the ceremonial weekend. The bad weather may be over, but he’s probably still just too embarrassed to show his face.

Paul C. - I admire and agree with everything you said, but I wouldn't waste a second of my time, energy or emotions feeling sorry for trump. He cares about no-one but himself.

Think about the elderly veteran who looked as though he didn't have two nickels to rub together who handed trump his own Purple Heart at one of Trump's rallies. Trump actually took the man's medal and told him that "he'd always wanted one of those." I couldn't t believe what I was seeing and hearing on live television! "He always wanted one of those"! He just didn't want to have to do what it takes to earn one.

My husband "earned" two purple hearts in Vietnam. They will be staying in our family. My son cherishes an old heavy German coin that's bent and split nearly in half that my late father, who died more than a decade before my son was born, brought home from Germany after WWII. That coin happened to be in my dad's shirt pocket when he was shot. It saved his life. How can you part with something like that?

I for one feel sorry for him. It must be difficult for a Draft Dodger to appear at any military function with veterans flouting their medals. It must be really difficult to be "Commander in Chief" without having the slightest knowledge of service or sacrifice for one's country and have to face those who have served and the relatives of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
